It's an interesting concept. But my bigger question is: are non-volatile flash drives suitable for long-term data storage?
Flash drives do have a life span, but thats pretty much been fixed to be equal or exceed disk based storage, which isn't all that great as a long term storage solution to begin with.
Hybrid drives aren't new, I remember consumer drives back in 07. So if they finally have some firmware thats storing the correct data on the rather tiny flash section, thats a nice improvement.
We need crystals.

As drive size increases, as do files and programs. Windows Vista and 7 are both larger than 4GB when installing, so the 4gb isn't going to help cut down that time. Many systems that would drop the extra coin on these drives, instead of raiding two disk drives are going to be in the enthusiast market. Meaning game and program installs that are 10-15GBs+.
A drive like this might help your average mom and dad open their email quicker, or get to quicken to balance their budget, and those are also the people who wouldn't notice the harddrive delay, because the harddrive isn't the bottleneck.
See that's what I thought and couldn't figure out how it was that the impressions of the reviewers when it came to real-world use were generally so positive!
And jesus, what's the world coming to when commonly used programs have to load more than 4GB worth of files when starting?![]()

No, that's just you
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
