This bothers me. Because there is obviously a strong disconnect between what people think goes on in the world and how it really works. Chris Kyle made what some would call controversial statements. But this man save potentially hundreds of lives, at extreme risk to his own. You can't get more hero then that. And having been over there ( yes sorry pull the card, but I was). And witnessing savagery first hand. I don't know. I think we are too insulated in our own little worlds sometimes.

Can the guy not simultaneously be an asshole and someone worthy of our respect for his accomplishments?
Hope is the denial of reality

I think the issue is that the skills and personality traits that are very useful in war are also strongly looked-down upon in normal society (i.e. a soldier who can kill without a second thought is very useful, but a civilian who does the same is rather dangerous). I imagine that the difficulty for soldiers returning home is maintaining their soldier identity without being stigmatized for not being a good "civilian."

Think this is a chicken/egg thing. These people are assholes long before military service. Who else would the ROTC prey on?

Actions speak louder than words. Bottom line was he put his life on the line for his country and did a damned good job.
