Its officially out to the public to download via the App Store. Anyone going to try it today? Impressions or differences noticed?
Still downloading mine.

I'm updating, since there are other improvements - but I've been using a program called Start8 to make Windows boot to desktop since near the beginning of my Windows 8 experience. I'll try 8.1 without it, of course, but I assume they will update Start8 (if it isn't already) if Microsoft still has it screwy.

For rand, since 8.1 doesn't ask by default which screen the computer should boot to

I updated, it disabled my surround screens, and wouldn't allow nvidia to reactivate them until after a 2nd restart, but all seems to be normal right now. biggest difference is that I can restart/shutdown from the desktop, no windows key + i anymore. a simple right click on the windows icon now. the icon that doesn't bring up a programs list like old, but instead takes you to the metro tiles. The metro tiles seem different too, they added a down arrow which lists a more in depth collection of programs and services. One more nail in the coffin of the desktop screen.
The popups pointing out everything new in windows 8 are annoying, but they don't seem to last long.
The extended App list recognizes Games For Windows Live games, but not Steam games. Thats stupid considering GFWL is being shut down in a few months.

My multifunctional printer from Brother is now missing the scanning-over-LAN feature, simply doesn't work.
I had tried the 8.1 preview a month back and had noticed that right from the start (bonus feature from Brother: The installer botched the job and ran perpetually in the background, making one unable to install anything else).
I also told them about this one month back. Answer: "We'll begin to care about that once it's out."
Morons. Not to mention that I don't understand why they had to roll out their own installation routine when Microsoft provides perfectly fine tools for creating installers.

it comes through the app store, not an update. no idea why, but the media center upgrade worked the same way, so I'm assuming its got to do with them considering this its own stand alone program/downloadable.

shit shit shit
8.1 breaks creative xfi drivers. No sound through my speakers, only works when i plug my headphones into the front jack on the fatality edition.
fuck
EDIT:
uninstall and reinstall fixed the issue. w00t!

its out to the public. Its a huge banner as soon as you open the app store. I don't know if they plan to treat it like a service pack and add it to the updates, or as its own extention, like Media Center.

Windows 8.1 no longer changes the tiles in the metro screen based on what you're typing. instead its a little search ribbon to the right. very uncool.

It suggests you go download it even if you don't go to the app store.
