Forums like pistonheads are full of stories of comings together and abuse between cyclists and car drivers.
Our roads are too crowded, and not nearly enough has been done to separate the bikes and the cars. The Europeans have done a much better job.
And with bikes increasing in popularity by huge margins year on year, it'll only get worse.
I'm curious how much physical damage one must do in Britain to get actual jail time.

I'm confused about what "Right of Way" means in the UK.
In the US it's a legal term, not limited to pedestrians or cyclists on land roads, but includes swimmers and certain boats on waterways.
"Right of Way", loosely translated, means the weaker operator or vehicle demands special caution from the stronger operator or vehicle.
I can't speak to your confusion about what "right-of-way" means in the UK but you're certainly confused about what it means in the US. In regards to traffic regulation *as opposed to other meanings on things like land-use* it's sole meaning is the priority list by which multiple moving agents cross the same or closely-situated paths and there are a host of rules regulating specific circumstances. Your "loose translation" is just one set of circumstances, the general priority to be assumed when there aren't other more explicit rules. A bike rider, for instance, does not have the right of way when they're moving against traffic. Being cautious around weaker operators/vehicles is codified common sense and safety, it doesn't actually speak to who has priority on the path though it may be used as a shorthand unofficial rule.Originally Posted by GGT

According to CCStev, “The driver was not charged. He was brought in for interview and initially claimed provocation, that I kicked his van and kicked him in the chest.
“He changed his story when told there was video evidence. He still claimed I kicked him and the van and only after the officer pointed out that she couldn't see any of that, on his solicitor's advice he finally accepted full responsibility.
"Because he had no police record and admitted to the offence, under the ridiculous scoring system imposed on the police he was eligible for a caution.
“As the victim I was given the choice of the driver receiving a caution or I could accept a local resolution, the terms of which that I would receive an amount in compensation and a written apology. I'm far from happy about it but reluctantly accepted the resolution.
“I don't think the police are to blame but the decisions made by Government departments that govern them.
So you can assault someone here, and get away with a paltry fine and a slap on the wrist.
*sigh* Well sounds like the ordinary crowd harassment of the guy's business is something.

The video doesn't show a thing other than that the driver of that van has a short fuse. I am inclined to think the cyclist is the one to blame. People who race their bikes through town like that usually are class A assholes.

There is more to it than the video shows, as is usually the case.
The guy has a youtube subscription, and it is filled with his little rants at motorists and clips of supposed minor traffic transgressions, with him blasting his airhorn at cars etc.
So it would seem he has a beef, and does antagonise other road users.
Saying that however, there is no excuse for the assault, and the van driver should have faced jail time.
