Ogre's Gun Thread.... a place for my redneck wanna be questions

So, my home arsenal is growing. I now have 3 9mm pistlols (a Kal-tec, a kahr, and my baby, Glock 17). Also got the 12ga shottie and a S&W AR15.

My questions to you guys are this.

I've been buying the cheapest rounds to go plink with, especially for my AR. I don't shoot a lot, but I've heard that this can be bad. Any of you guys have thoughts on this?

I'm also considering getting another AR15, i've heard a lot about piston rifles, but i really don't know that much about these things. I'm a rookie at rifles. Any former military or gun afficianodos willing to offer suggestions? Like where to purchase? what the benefits and cons of certain upgrades are?

I dunno. I totally dig material possessions. I like having a big house, a big yard, a big truck... typical redneck things. But I really do enjoy the stress relief that comes from shooting. Going to the range and emptying a couple of clips is very relaxing.

I've also worked hard for everything I have and would be pissed if anyone took it without me putting up a fight. But if the shit hit the fan, I don't know if I could shoot somebody.

For instance. My shotgun is a short barrel that I leave right beside the closet door solely for home defense. I have it loaded with bird shot as the first round, the next 3 are buckshot, and the last round is a police riot round. The goal being if someone breaks into my house, hopefully the distinctive sound of chambering a round in my shottie will scare the perp. However if that doesn't work, then I have it loaded purposely not to kill on the first shot. Bird shot won't do anything but take off a layer of skin and hurt like a bitch. But if they are still coming after me, I can quickly chamber the second round and take someone out.

My sister killed someone in the line of duty. The perp was attacking her partner. Sister shot and killed the perp. It changed her. I don't know if it was for the worse, but she's a different person now. I don't know how I would react if I killed someone ,so hopefully it never comes to that. But I'd rather be prepared to do so, and not need to..... then not be prepared and need to kill someone.... KWIM?

Just a few points that may or may not be of interest.

First, if you are only planning on using your AR for plinking, and not shooting targets at any distance, don't worry as much about the ammunition. It's probably going to be dirtier and less accurate than more expensive match/military ammunition, but if you aren't typically shooting at targets past 100 meters, and regularly clean your weapon it won't matter too much. There is a performance difference between cheap Russian Wolf/Brown Bear ammunition and decent South African military surplus.

Second, sight in your gun with the same ammunition you plan on using in it. Different ammunition will perform/behave wildly differently in your gun, and if you stock up on a certain brand you can eliminate a lot of that uncertainty.

Third, unless you are shooting several thousand rounds a month, or have purchased, or plan on purchasing a suppressor/SBRing your weapon, retrofitting your AR with a gas piston won't benefit you much. It will add cost, weight, complexity, (introducing new and interesting points of failure) into your weapon, and is made to address a problem you likely aren't having. Your AR is probably functioning just fine without it, and you likely won't notice any improvements with a piston system.

I can vouch for the stress relief angle, it really does ease tension and calm the soul to fire a few dozen rounds of ammo from a firearm. I do this rarely now, it seems as I get older I just don't get the urge to shoot as much as I once did. I am not a resident of the US of A and as such do not have the right to own quite the range of weapons as Ogre but I'm ok with that. Currently I have no firearms in the family home, they are all locked away on the farm where they are essential tools.

It is rare for folks to keep guns for protection here but not so rare that it doesn't happen, it is also rare for criminals to use firearms but again it is not so rare that it never happens.

Anyhow as for the ammo question, Enoch gives sound and sensible advise.

I've used repack shotgun cartridges for blasting the shit out of stuff but wouldn't use them for anything "important" and the .222 doesn't like cheap ammo. We just spend the extra few coins to avoid unnecessary complications - like if you are shooting to kill an animal you really don't want to fuck it up and cause unnecessary suffering (or let it get away) by using cheap ammo. The .22 ammo is so cheap anyway I can't imaging trying to save money.

Despite the stigma attached to firearms in some places they really can be great fun - yes they can also wreak havoc in the wrong hands (hence the stigma) but there are a great many tools for wreaking havoc and the vast majority of them are not nearly as demonized or controversial as firearms.

Just the answer I was looking for. I clean the AR after I shoot it, almost every time, but at the very least every OTHER time. And clean my pistols every time. I sincerely appreciate the information.

Although I'm enlisted in the army, I don't like shooting particularly much. I did before, but then I misfired once into the ground while other people were around me. Since then I've sorta been scared, even if routine and dicipline makes me relatively safe compared to a normal gunman in the U.S. So far I've only shot with a Heckler & Koch 416N and MP5.





I've held and seen respectively the MG-3 and Barrett M82 (.50 cal) in action. Although not the newest, they are intimidating enough.

Dude, I'm digging the MP5. Been looking at getting a 9mm rifle, and that thing would fit the bill. How accurate is it?

I got nothing to compare it to, so I can't say. I find the HK 416N to be more accurate, but that's no wonder seeing how the MP5 is meant for more closed area combat.

So, to bump an old thread...If you were looking for a smaller gun to carry concealed, and you were my size, what would be your choice(s)? I've looked at a few different ones but so far the Baby Glock has my interest. What I want to know is, how safe would it be for me? Keep in mind 2 things here...1. I have been raised with guns and know my way around them safely, and 2. I want something small enough to conceal on my person without noticeable bulges, etc!

Have gotten to shoot with a few more guns since last time. First, the MG-3 (Machine Gun).



Looks old as hell, and probably is too, but it packs a punch. I frankly wouldn't be dashing forward without this one heating up the air.

And I finally got to try a .50 cal material destruction rifle (the scope was different). Holy shit that snaps at my shoulder.



Even so I'm off the opinion that only the army, specialized police and hunters in season should be allowed firearms. Personal ones can go to hell. They're used for crime, or in the belief that they'll protect you against crime. Well, damn, I certainly don't have much worth a life to protect. I also don't expect a psychopath to jump me with the intention of murder. With those two cleared, I can't warrant myself having a personal firearm, when I'm informed of all the irresponsible people who would have gotten one if it was allowed.

As we don't use personal firearms, cops don't either.
