    Default TV kills baby brains

    Just don't do it, okay?

I've already decided there will be little in the way of TV until they're somewhat safe.

Well, I guess my kid is brain dead then. Me too for that matter, since TV was around in the '80s.

Scarlett is on her 5th run through of the 90something episodes of Dora the Explorer.

Poor girl never had a chance.

Even when media plays in the background, it distracts babies from play, an activity that is known to havedeep developmental benefits. And for parents who use media to carve out a few precious, necessary free minutes in busy schedules, Brown recommended letting kids entertain themselves.
“We know you can’t spend 24 hours a day reading to your child and playing with them. That’s okay. What’s also okay is your child playing independently,” she said. “That’s valuable time. They’re problem-solving. They’re using their imagination, thinking creatively and entertaining themselves.”
Very true. Babies learn from Play and playing, and especially independent "quiet time play". This has always been true, but something often ignored in our fast paced visual and auditory world, so enamored with digital media. TV screens are everywhere, music is even played in elevators (muzak?) and cars.

Those e-Trade commercials portraying babies as investors is both slick and twisted. <So simple even a baby can do it! Juxta-positioned with babies taking iPads or Blackberries with e-Trade apps to their crib for a "nap".>

When my kids were little, they used to say shit like, "The Smiths have a DVD player in their mini-van, and they can watch movies in the car! Why don't we have that?" I'd tell them we could sing-along with radio or CD music, or they could play License Plate games (where every state tag was marked on the map, and they had to predict which states were predominant, and make bets), Roadway (an old highway game where you get points for calling out Roadway trucks), read books or take naps. Or they could look out the damn car window and see REAL mountains, rivers, valleys, towns, bridges, trains, sea ports, boats....instead of watching movies. To help them feel "active" while strapped in their car seats, I'd give them maps, crayons and markers, and boat loads of paper. At the end of 600 mile trips they had great drawings of mountains, hills, valleys, trains and trucks, bridges and cars, could sing lyrics from songs, gained a sense of direction and time, began to understand the states, and learned our national geographical map. All while traveling as passengers in the car, without any damn movie playing in front of them.

    Spoiler:
    I kill children
I love to see them die
    I kill children
    And make their mamas cry
    Crush 'em under my car
    I wanna hear them scream
    Feed 'em poison candy
    To spoil their Halloween

So you're in the kids' ward
You're in there cause you're ill
    How about some Pavulon
So I can see you chill
Time to hit the school bus
I think I'll shoot the tires
    Offer them a helping hand
    Of open telephone wires

Ever wanted to die? Of course you have
But I won't till I get my revenge
I've been butt-fucked one too many ways
I don't wanna see people any more
Things I never ever saw before
Make me see them for the shit they are
Take as many as I can away with me
Anyone can be king for a day

    So I kill children
I love to see them die
    I kill children
    And make their mamas cry
I bang their heads in doors

    I kill children
    Can hardly wait for yours...

I think it applies to baby brains too, but I could be wrong.

I agree with babies interacting on their own, they are doing problem solving. They have troubles reaching something, or holding something, they adapt and learn, and discover patterns. Definitely true, However, to say a t.v. is just a glowing screen to a child, I disagree with, and I would be inclined to say it's not even all bad.

First off, if you ever put a glowing screen in front of a kid, they don't watch it... they are percieving somethign entertaining (more than just some arbritary screen) whether the content passes to fast for their brains to take anything from it, I may agree with. However, I do think introducing them to new noises, images, colors etc.. is useful in theri development. However, I don't think it's a replacement for traditoinal methods of interaction. In fact, I'd recommend interacting while they watch their sing-along song.

I have no problems with the study, but i'd be surprised if tv watching couldn't be implemented in a useful way.
