Upgrading this coming Saturday evening.

Last couple upgrades have been pretty clean, so I'm not expecting any problems with this one either. This upgrade also brings with it an official mobile theme, so we'll see how that goes. It looks like it's not as lightweight as the one we've got now, so it might be a nice compromise for those who want something nicer looking but still usable on phones. I probably won't want to support both themes, so there may be a vote about which one gets the boot after people have had a week or so to play around with it.

looking forward to it. just out of curiosity, how's the admin stuff gone so far from the technical side of things? Are there lots of headaches? Does the CMS stuff work all right?

Headaches seem to mostly be taken care of now. First few months were rough, but things seem to be under control. CMS stuff works alright. You thinking of getting a personal license?

Yup, planning on dragging our student union screaming and kicking into the century of the fruitbat. Have some ideas for studying tools and the like that I think would be well served by the CMS features and widgets and whatnot, but it's still a bit of a jungle to me.

You seem to have beaten this place into shape but I assumed most of the problems took place behind the scenes or when we were asleep

To troll us into the "why not both mobile themes" debate, does the current mobile theme really require any support? Forgive my ignorance if it actually does. But I imagine each mobile theme could be really different depending on device, screen size, connection, etc.

It does need support, particularly around upgrade time, but it's also the theme with the most requests for modification the past few months.

Anyways, could we table this for a week or so, to see what the official mobile theme looks like?

I don't know that it needs support as much as it is that the bare bones it thinks we need aren't the same as the ones I think it does. I would love to use my purple theme, but it just doesn't frame itself and scroll well enough. I'm quite curious about the official one.

Due to some concerns about the 4.1.2 version, I'm holding off on the upgrade. No reason for us to be beta testers. I did the prep-work for the upgrade already though, so when it comes, it should be fast.

The issues around the 4.1.2 version appear to be resolved. Expect an upgrade soonish. More exact timing will be available a few moments before it happens.

When you click top in the default mobile it takes you to the blog.

New mobile theme looks slick, though I question if it would work on blackberries. Wonder if the avatars increase load time...

It's a lot less functional than the other mobile theme.

It seems to me that all it takes out is the navigation buttons. It might be good on a tablet, but it's pretty much unusable on my win 7 phone.

Also, Wraithy, on the old mobile them the little marks for forums with unread thingies went wonky.

Prob worth clearing your cookies and/or cache so it can lay new hatchling cookies.

After playing around with it more, the new mobile theme is definitely more readable, but also really noticeably slower. And opening different threads in multiple tabs on my Android doesn't work without refreshing each tab.

It's definitely slick, but there are some drawbacks compared to the existing mobile theme...

From what I can tell, vB's mobile theme is even quite slow on mobile Safari.
