Thread: Lawsuits for the Cure.

    Default Lawsuits for the Cure.

Mega-non-profit, Susan B. Komen foundation sues over use of "for the cure."

I find it ironic they use the pink ribbon logo, taken from the Red Ribbon of the AIDS Awarenss organization, which was designed to be free of copyright, so anyone can use it to raise awareness.

Another recognizable feature of Komen for the Cure events is the color pink — and lawyers for the foundation has also put out warnings to those who might attempt to capitalize on the color.

Regarding the lawsuit and protection of the foundation’s trademark, Jonathan Blum, Komen’s general counsel, wrote in an email: “We see it as responsible stewardship of our donor’s funds.”

I don't want them frittering my donations into this kind of bullshit. What a shame.

The only reason I could understand this action is if there is a "charity" that is specifically using this and claiming to be part of Komen, but is in fact not a part of them and using the money for noncharitable reasons.

Other than that, I am increasingly irritated by the amount of merchandise you can buy with the pink logo on it. I really wonder what little portion actually goes into research and such.

(This thread title made me think they were suing a medical institute who won't release a cure for cancer....I need more coffee)

This is idiocy. Komen is one of the major private pools of breast cancer money, when you see events and stuff, but that gives them no right to something like ribbons.

I find it ironic they use the pink ribbon logo, taken from the Red Ribbon of the AIDS Awarenss organization, which was designed to be free of copyright, so anyone can use it to raise awareness.
To be fair, all ribbons were ripped off from the Tony Orlando and Dawn song (which I think was sipped off of something else). Pretty silly for anybody to try to copyright a ribbon color or generic slogan like "for the cure."
