DeSantis had to do something to change the headlines. Before this, it was all about how he was pulling a Ted Cruz and vacationing while Florida was being flooded. People might have started thinking he doesn't care about anyone's lives, only caring about how much control he can have over them.

At this point, I see only two medium-term futures for the US. Either the Republican party implodes as its Federalist and Whig predecessors did and a new minority party coalesces from the fragments, independents, and Dem split-offs (even money on whether the new party is a conservative one, particularly fiscally, or whether the Democrats turn in that direction and hemorrhage off their progressive wing) or we break out in at least a minor civil war and I can't begin to predict the outcome of a regional or nation-wide violent political confrontation. The GOP isn't going to turn away on its own from this direction of populist authoritarianism, democracy-suppression, and conviction that guns and God justify anything they want to try,
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"
The problem with any splintering of the GOP is 80% of the GOP voters will go to the lunatic wing. Until the right-wing media/social media landscape drastically changes, things aren't getting any better.
