For the life of me, I have never understood the US penal system's constantly-demonstrated interest in not allowing inmates to read.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"
Surely inmates reading should be a very good thing?

I'd think so. I know part of it is the penny-pinching budgeting, since the US public certainly doesn't would prefer to not even be paying for food and shelter for criminals, much less "luxuries" like books, education, or medicine. But it seems to me that it often goes out of ways to restrict reading access even beyond that and I don't understand.

Indeed. I mean, I can see how "The Anarchist's Cookbook" could be problematic but everything else?
