The fact is trade treaties benefit both Switzerland and the EU, in fact in absolute terms they benefit the EU more, we do not want a greater union with them then that and you are telling us how you are going to force us in to that greater union. And if we refuse you will withdraw from treaties that benefit you in order to make us suffer. Will France join pigs before Switzerland caves in I wonder.
Sure, you can "survive" without them, the same way that North Korea "survives" without trade. That doesn't mean you wouldn't pay an immense cost to do so. To suggest that an advanced entity with half a billion people benefits more from trade with an entity with 8 million people than vice versa is ridiculous.

There is this tendency with the Swiss to think they are the indispensable partner. They also seem to think that the phrase 'just because of our geographical position' is an argument, as if it isn't something they can't change.

In the subject 'Swiss sovereignty' this is a real nugget; Sueddeutsche . The story boils down to this; when a hijacked airplane was flown to Geneva this morning it had to be escorted by French fighter jets, beceause the Swiss airforce was still not open for business.

Don't forget to mention which parties are planning to change that (also in the article).

You've got to admire Angela Merkel; say something entirely non-committal about an issue while taking a firm position. She understands the Swiss problems, she accepts the fact that the Swiss people have spoken, then she tells reminds the Swiss government there is no reason whatsoever to rush the matter since there are three years to look for a solution.

Three years during which the EC piles up pressure of course, and three years the Swiss told they didn't want to wait.
