    Well, yes.

Why would I want my perfectly-played set of turns ruined subsequently by a bunch of faceless morans?

It is also older than most of the current continents.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

  8. #248
So that would make it almost as old as Chacha?

Okay, yeah, I'm done with that theme now.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

Haven't found King to be so hard yet. I overextended myself and got into a couple of nasty wars, yes, but the AI is so strategically inept it wasn't hard at all to become the dominant power in Eurasiafrica. Currently rolling over Bismark in America in the 1800s as I've made it into the modern era and everyone else was lightyears behind. Songhai ability of triple pillaging has helped me build up and incredible amount of wealth which I spend on city states and pumping out buildings. Looking forward to being able to delete buildings with the patch.

    10/14 UPDATE: Mo

Also, many people have been asking for an ETA on when this patch will be released. I said I'd do what I can to get some sort of ETA and now I have it for you. However! I am about to do something I don't normally like to do: Give an ETA. Big emphasis on the E. So what I am about to tell you is the current estimation of when it will be available. This patch is not done with testing at the current time, and most everyone in software development has experienced the dreaded last minute showstopper bug that forces a delay. This could happen! So, with all of that in mind:

The patch will be available as early as next week.

I love the Aztecs. Or. I love killing everything I see. In Vegas now so I can't play. I think I let too many people live in my cities and that's giving me unhappiness. Anyone have ideas how to fix? Should I pillage my own far and starve them out?

    Social policies that give happiness.
    Build collosseums, circuses and theatres.
Go for wonders that give you immediate happiness, like the Hanging Gardens and The Eiffel Tower.
Ally with city states that have a luxury resource you don't.
Trade your spare luxury resources with other nations that have spare luxury resources you don't.

I go for all out growth, I like big cities, and lots of them. I therefore take happiness VERY seriously.

It's hard to trade luxuries and be friends when you kill everything you see. Destroy the farms and starve the children, that works...

    Don't destroy farms

Build libraries, markets, uni's and banks and divert your peeps to there. If you don't have those, just unemploy them. They still produce a hammer when unemployed.

Also maybe build less farms in favour of trade posts.

    Science victory.

Somehow managed to build my spaceship before the Persians, even though they started before me.

Only got around 1600 points though, whereas my previous two domination victories, on easier Prince, netted over 3000 points. Ne comprends pas.

    ~

Onwards. Next game, Huge Marathon French. Domination only victory option.

So just stop working food producing hexes? I can do that, but I am a brutal, cruel people. Destroying my own farms is quite in character.

Yep, but it didn't solve the everlasting peace treaty in my game. Guess it doesn't work on saves.

    Had to download the makewarnotlove-mod.

I'm in a similar spot against Japan, though Oda hasn't gotten that dominant yet. He has, however, taken over everything on the continent with the exception of my small coastal empire (and the damn Songhai, with whom he no doubt has a pact of cooperation.) My initial plan was to let him do so, then reclaim all his lands, give them back, and win diplomatically. But now I see how kick ass his military is and how fast he could wreck me if he so chooses.

Does the patch automatically download, or am I totally missing the d/l link?

First policy on the right of commerce will help with that. Because of the cost I only build roads to connect cities, otherwise it's a bitch to maintain and gives my enemies an easier route to the center of my network.

Yeah, I found that yesterday. So, I was in the hole by 180 per turn and getting worse. I'd built all these roads so I could get my armies around more conveniently. After I had my workers destroy all the extra roads I was only down 50. Then with that policy in place it dropped to 30.

Also you don't have to build roads to coastal cities, just harbours. Patch d/l-ed automatically for me when I started the game.

And I was totally destroyed. Waves of infantry vs a couple of rifleman equals very dead rifleman. No chokepoints I could use, and he sent lots of units on an amphibious invasion over a lake that separated us, which I was defending with frigates. He has destroyers.

So, I lost that one. Nice

My empire is very spread out and I needed to be able to get the troops from point A to point B quickly. If I relied on harbors, that would not work well.

On a related not to your defeat, I had two epic wars with the romans, the last survivors on my continent and during the high point I had no money and no science and my units were quitting because I couldn't pay them. I was just trying to build more fast enough so the deserters didn't hurt the war effort. That happened twice and the the no science thing set my research back a long way. So, as I consolidate after wiping my ass with Rome, I send some boats out to explore the world and right across the pond, so to speak, is BizMark who is fielding artillery and infantry while I've yet to build my first musket unit. I'm fucked. There's no way I can modernize in time to keep him from kicking my ass when he decides to.

Regarding the patch, does that install automatically when you run the game? Or do you have to run steam separately? I noticed some changes....

Installed automatically here. I also noticed some changes.

    - AI uses a lot more navy. I just had a most enjoyable sea battle with England (fighting against +2 moves is confusing).
    - AI uses a lot more amphibious assault and looking for islands to settle.

Yep I just restarted too last night.

Had a strange thing about the patch. I had restarted a game after the patch was out, and my version on the Civ 5 title screen showed v1.0.0.62 correctly. But after a couple of hours play I shut down, and Steam indicated a 68% complete download for Civ 5. Weird.

So I let it download and started a new game, as I don't think patch updates saved games.

Do you guys railroad all your roads?

Having gold issues in later games, as my tendency is to railroad the entire road network, and I always have every city roaded to capital. This is proving a hugely expensive policy though. Railroaded to city does give a +50% bonus to production for that city, so it is damn useful. But so expensive.

Question: Roads cost +1 gold per tile, and Railroads +2 per tile. Is this maintenance cost for roads/railroads only on tiles within city boundaries, or is it for all roads/railroads?

EDIT: Thinking about it, it must be only for tiles within city boundaries. Don't see how what roads are yours or are somebody elses can be identified otherwise. Unless the AI keeps track of which roads/railroads you actually built, which I find unlikely.

If it's outside of the territory, the one who built them, pays for them, so yep, it keeps track who was the original owner.

I have never got to the point where I build railroads. Game I'm playing now is the first one I'm playing to win, so I'll get back to you on that one. I also don't road everywhere. If a city is closest to a city on the coast with a harbour, it gets connected to that city alone, so it'll trade through the harbour.

I think the AI keeps track of who built them. As I destroyed roads I built outside city boundries, my costs dropped.

Regarding rail, I've not played a game long enough to build them. Soon, though. Unless Bismark decides to kill me. He's in the Modern Age and I just entered the Industrial. Trying to catch up, but I think he'll be setting up colonies on Mars or something before I can build tanks.
