Why not just patent "all electronic devices"?

    From the comments.

In the Motorola case, Apple argued that a tap is a zero length swipe, and thus a violation of their patent. Those guys really are assholes.

I've heard that Apple spends more money on patent-related lawsuits than it does on R&D.

They know Android is going to sweep them aside eventually, the same way Microsoft Windows did to the early Macs - and for similar reasons.

Fewer hipsters in the world back then.

I can't figure out how this system makes sense. Esp. since webos has had an unlock-method that is, superficially at least, identical to the new patent claims.

Hipsters are fickle, though. Sort of the point of them.

What is wrong with the world is summed up not in the idea that a French phone company tried to charge a customer €12,000,000,000,000,000 (12qn) ... but that once alerted to it the call-centre staff offered to let her pay it off in installments.

The World has gone crazy for cell phones, mobile phones.....digital media, social media....recording voices, texting pictures, capturing videos. Everything lives in a small computer, a camera, snapshot, click, enter, share. Instantaneous gratification in milliseconds. Smart phones "fucking" one another to share video or music files. What a strange World it's become.

GGT, this is one of the strangest things you've ever said. It is stranger than the world

Its an odd way to put it, but I've seen commercials that show how phones can now dry hump to share files.

What OG said. It's like pointing remote controls at one another, where one reads and inputs the data from the other, so you can download instead of re-program.

Not sure which smartphones can do it other than Samsung, but you can transfer files instantly by putting their "faces" together. I could have called it Kissing, but felt like being crude because of the stream exchange. Sorry.

The only interface I can think of that takes advantage of the close proximity between and the lining up of the faces of two devices is IR. Kinda superceded by either bluetooth or wireless through a shared portal. IR was always shit the few times I used it.

There are various apps online now which make it even easier. Whats App springs to mind, tho not sure if that allows sharing of files other than pics & vids. Whats App has superceded texting for most of my friends now.

No, I know very well what feature you guys are talking about, I'm just saying it was the strangest formulation and reference in the history of this forum. Compared to eg. Touch to Share

Not surprised in the slightest considering how close the 2 companies had been getting. But its still a current and future WTF. Disney just bought Lucasfilms. Already announced Episode 7.

Power back on....cable tv access again....Romney on the screen. He's speechifying today (despite promises to lay low during a disaster), blaming Obama for everything that's wrong (while saying Obama is trying to lay blame on others), making grand promises of his own without specifics, asking the crowd if they want more of the last four years.....or a return to (basically) Bush policies. Plus a drill baby drill honorary mention.

He said he'd be a friend in Washington, not a foe. Quite a hunk-o-hope to swallow after he's spent the last 6+ years hating on Washington and promising to shrink fed'rul gummit. He promises 12 million new jobs in four years, neglecting to mention that will happen regardless of who's POTUS. Trying to act as a uniter, not a divider, using divisive tactics. Speech full of flags, hearts, family, faith, and America as Hope of The EARTH!

Do people really fall for this cheerleading crap days before an election? Did his staff really think that's the right strategy? WTF

I discovered, via the below FB update, that a uni friend whom I'd kept in touch with in the intervening years has gone off to live an eco-lifestyle in a hut with some others in the middle of the woods ...

Is snug and warm at Pengraig. Just made a magnificent - even if I say so myself - leftovers soup for dinner. It's freezing cold outside and very wet, but have got a pile of logs in and am feeding the woodstove. Toasty! Tomorrow's plan, move the kitchen inside! That will maker the house rather warmer, and homelier too, I guess! The endless wooding goes on, for winter fuel!
I have to look at plans for a yurt base, so that a live in yurt can be put up. I have cleared some space for it in the garden, and the view from it will be magnificent!
There's a lot to do here, and it can take a while, but with the +ive energy there is here, we shall prevail! Plenty of things to learn about, there is a lot of expertise here. I am keeping and eye on the amazing constructions going on in the new sauna block. Yes, you heard right! Mark's engineering skills are legendary, the recycling operation has to be seen to be believed.

PS. Can someone come and help chop wood? Visitors are most welcome!

If that made you go WTF, look up Pentti Linkola when you've nothing better to do
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Linkola blames humans for the continuous degradation of the environment. He promotes rapid population decline[4] in order to combat the problems commonly attributed to overpopulation. He is also strongly in favour of deindustrialization and opposes democracy, which he calls the "Religion of Death,"[5] believing it to be an agent of wasteful capitalism and consumerism. He considers the proponents of economic growth to be ignorant of the destructive effects which free market policies have had over the past two centuries.
    ...
He demands that man return to a smaller ecological niche and abandon modern technology and what he describes as the almost-religious pursuit of economic growth. Linkola considers human population growth the biggest threat to life on Earth.
    ...
He advocates eugenics, genocide, and abortion as possible means to combat overpopulation. He describes the Stalinist and Nazi massacres, as "massive thinning operations," but which have "not overturned our ethical norms".[8] He has suggested that big cities should be attacked by "some trans-national body like the UN", with nuclear weapons or with "bacteriological and chemical attacks".[9] Linkola has described humans as a cancer of the earth, and he desires that the human population "be reduced to about ten percent of what it is now."[10][11][12]

Not a big fan of man then.

He was one of the people starting up our Green party way back when, but he left the movement when it became evident they weren't nearly deep ecological enough for his tastes. He has interesting exchanges on the opinion pages every now and then.
