It was a good film but not that good as the hype would have one believe; we've already had Deadwood
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Motherhood. An excellent movie if you want justification for hating New Yorkers. Otherwise a horrible movie, in every sense.

Killers. A lot better than I was expecting, good pacing, light on the love story, and guns. The ending was predictable, but I think they tried to do that on purpose.

    Saw The Hangover last night.

    Was a bit, meh.

It didn't really know whether to be a buddy-bonding-road trip, or a send-up á la Farelly brothers, and ended up being neither.

The Alan character elicited a few chuckles though.

The Hangover was awesome Mike Tyson, tigers, babies, little pissed naked foreign men, stolen police cars....whats not to love? Alan guy was a little to distracting for the few highlights he gave, which was mainly limited to the police station. Otherwise I just considered him an annoying character.

Yeh, but you thought Ghost was awesome.

    ~

It was likeable enough, but the story just didn't hang together well for me.

    Spoiler:

I was kind of enjoying it 'till they were picked up by the cops, and they went through that ridiculous tazering scene in front of the kids.

That scene threw it, cos it was farcical, which is why I mention the Farelly brothers. That scene was more their style. Yet it didn't fit. And that kinda ruined the rest of the movie for me.

Felt it was all a bit ... samey, too. Which is why I liked the Alan character cos he was unpredictable.

Cop Out. It was a fun movie. Peggy Lipton's daughter was in it and she was wearing a skimpy nighty.

Eat Pray Love, a chick flick if ever there was one. Lot's of self-reflection, lots of wise eastern ideas and at the end of it all, finding one-self and a soulmate to top it off. Pleasant fluff with Julia Roberts, who seems to have aged very little since Pretty Woman. The only part that was a bit over the top was the Roman flat; that was a bit too much 50s of the previous century for my taste. Modern plumbing has reached even the eternal city.
    Congratulations America

Buried. Apparently Ryan Reynolds can't act his way out of a box but can do a damn good job while trapped in one.

Cell 211, a dark dark dark Spanish movie about how small mistakes can have bit effects and how you can't always trust the people you trust most. On a scale of 1 to 10 an easy 9. I saw it in a sneak preview and expected many people to walk out on the mere opening credits that showed it had been co-sponsored by the government of Galicia, still out of 600 people maybe 12 people left. The rest of the audience was pulled in very fast into the drama that developed on the screen.
    Congratulations America

Saw the Manchurian Candidate last night.

Was expecting good things with such a stellar cast.

    Boy was I disappointed.

    I gave it a 6/10. My lady gave it a 4.

Was looking like it might be ok until it took a trip to weirdsville, and was just not believable from that moment on. Shame, cos Meryl Streep was v good.

Jacob's Ladder covered this concept of secret-mind-control-experiements-on-soldiers-at-war in a much more accomplished manner, and was 10x the movie. One of my all-time favourites.

Oh, and on the subject of Streep, I saw a Cry in the Dark for the first time recently.

    Very, very good.

Really showed the dangers of media intrusion into the judicial process.

    Excellent movie.

Triple post, cos I love the sound of my own typing.

Saw Made in Dagenham at the Picture House in Brixton last night.

Was expecting a fairly lightweight, light-hearted Brit-flick a la Full Monty or Billy Elliot.

It was better; a very nice movie which touched me.

Movie is a true story about the 187 female upholstery machinists working for the Ford Motor Company plant in Dagenham, who, in 1968 went on strike to earn equal pay for women. Their movement went right to the heart of the unions, government and industry, bringing about the Equal Pay Act two years later, the first country in the Western World to bring about equal pay rights for women.

    Recommended, 8.5/10.

Gamer: I enjoyed this movie. It had a plot, lots of well placed CGI, alright acting, and the Swordfish level buzzword dropping was limited to the characters who weren't techies. Although at times it was confusing where the scene was taking place. Are they outside looking at a projection on a wall, or inside looking at a giant TV screen? A huge plot hole seemed to be the use of cameras, you spent a large part of the movie viewing the action as if you were in the crowd, but there was no logical place for a camera to be filming the action, and the one time they tried to explain this (floating softball sized recorders), didn't fit into the other times that were lacking a camera. This is the movie that Microsoft could only dream of their Kinect being able to duplicate.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: Whats up with Clooney's push into WTF movies? Fantastic Mr. Fox, Burn after Reading, this movie, etc... I think the last good movie I'd seen him in was Leatherheads. Men Who Stare at Goats would have been better as 15 minute SNL skits that made fun of the military and the war. We didn't meet the goat until at least 80% through the movie!

I think part of it was that the technology that allowed control of the combatants, or the Second Life like puppets, also allowed you to view what they, or anyone else implanted with said technology was seeing. The floating softball sized recorders were mainly for 3rd person views for players and observers, or cinematic and setup shots for observers.

#1. Escape to Witch Mountain (with the kids)

Quick Review: Horrible film, even for a shitty Disney kids flick. (1/5 stars)

    #2. The Lovely Bones

Quick Review: Not terrible, though I'm not sure I understand the point of it. Sad, creepy, fightening to some extent. Acting could have been better. (2.5/5 stars)

    #3. Taken

Quick Review: What, did Liam Neison forget how to act? Oh, and the film's plot is riddled with holes of implausibility, though I did like it when the protagonist (unexpectedly) shoots the innocent wife of the French spy-gone-bad in the arm. Terrible film. (1/5 stars)

Last friday I went to the Belgian premiere of Somewhere (the new Sofia Coppola movie) at the Ghent Film Festival. I enjoyed it, thought it was pretty good. And the reception with free booze after the viewing certainly helped

Hmmm.... I liked Virgin Suicides and I really liked Lost in Translation. Didn't care for her Marie Antoinnette film, though (good soundtrack, however). Have to get a look at this one.

It comes out in december! If you liked those, you'll probably like this one too.

speaking of soundtrack: I also got free tickets to the world soundtrack awards ceremony. Totally awesome! First the winner of a contest for young composers had his soundtrack of a short movie (the administrators) played live by the brussels philharmonic orchestra with dirk brossé (he also did star wars in concert) while showing the movie. Then the award ceremony, with some pieces played by the orchestra on movie excerpts.

And then ten of the best soundtrack composers in the world had their pieces played (and often played piano/guitar with it themselves) , again with movie excerpts. really cool!

The disappearance of Alice Creed; a young woman is kidnapped by two men. As the story unfolds it turns out love and lies trade places repeatedly. In the end nothing is certain but that the crime paid, not for the kidnappers though.

    Daybreakers

Quick Review: It was just short of horrible more because of the writing and direction than the performances. I typically like Ethan Hawke and he did fine in this film. It was just poorly written - the concept was interesting, just poorly executed. 2/5 stars

This was the short film that was shown at the world soundtrack awards, with a score (not this one, but I couldn't find a version of the winner) performed by the brussels philharmonic orchestra

I just finished watching Get Him To The Greek. Wow, that was a really good movie. If you ever saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this movie is about the rock star boyfriend. It was really very good, especially the songs.

    The Crazies.

The movie couldn't figure out if it was a story of survival, a zombie rip off, or a Resident Evil rip off.
Hell, the Resident Evil movies had fewer scenes that make you go "that doesn't make sense!".

Oh no! I was about to say that I didn't like this movie. The idea behind it is novel, but the acting was pretty bad. The movie would have been redeemed had Michael C Hall had his shirt off the whole time. And that accent - gotta go.
