Florida's infected count keeps climbing according to the local news. The Monday update could look a bit crazy. Oh and it's in DC now and hospitals are being told to plan for a workload 10x that of the flu season.

The funny thing about not having daily updates is that having an update after 3 days could emphasise how much its going up.

All Trump cares about is the economy and the NYSE. He thinks if he can pretend the virus isn't real the economic damage will be minimised, instead he's going to cause it to be much, much greater. China will be back up and running and back to normal long before Trump's America.

It'd take a constitutional amendment to do the latter though wouldn't it? AFAIK the elections can be postponed by weeks, but can't be cancelled.
As opposed to in this country where elections can be postponed in times of emergency (as was famously done during WWII and less famously in 2001)

"All of Italy now on lockdown". All public gatherings are banned by the Pope and the PM. Their healthcare system is crumbling?
And the Olympic torch passing ceremonies in Japan (and Greece) will be closed to the public. Arenas are hosting sports events without spectators. Understandable, from a public health perspective.
But in the US it doesn't really make sense, because we don't really value the lives of seniors...they're just a huge demographic that we tolerate, because it makes for lots of jobs in several sectors. When politicians talk about reducing "entitlements", the first people to complain aren't the elderly themselves, but their doctors, nurses, home-caretakers, plus anyone that mows their lawn or installs low-step showers. Geriatrics is a huge money-making industry. Keep people alive longer, make more money for yourself. Convince yourself that you're improving their quality of life, even tho they pray to die.
I read somewhere that covid-19 is the "Angel of Death" for the elderly. I can see why that might be a welcomed thing, especially for folks "warehoused" innursing homeslong-term facilities, worrying about their medical costs pushed onto their kids. Since we focus too much on longevity and not enough on quality of life, that's a real and valid concern.

Italy really stuffed this up and its frustrating me people in this country running around like headless chickens suggesting we do the same things the Italians did like shutting down all schools. That's not a good idea at all at this stage.
America very possibly could be like Italy soon such is its lack of testing.
Every single major economy will have to start making the same decisions. For the NHS, the question is how badly they'll be fucked—completely or just almost completely. Social distancing is going to prove to be the single most important measure in response to the pandemic, and people are not going to stop going to major gatherings voluntarily so govt. will have to become more firm. The NHS's resources are public, and the govt has the mandate and the responsibility to protectively safeguard those resources.

Social distancing is important, but shutting schools without other measures isn't social distancing. In fact it can be very counter-productive if it means children (who will continue to mingle) end up being supervised more by their at-risk grandparents.

I forgot to mention that the elderly are mostly "valued" when they're taking care of their grandkids.
The US claims to have a "whole of government" approach, but states are using test kits from independent labs, and the CDC isn't the main clearing house for ALL the data. That's fucked up.
Interestingly there party politics seems to dominate while here party-politics has been set aside completely. Not having any national elections for the foreseeable future probably helps but there are the devolved administration elections due in May.
But currently all those in office, regardless of party, are singing from the same hymnsheet. The response is co-ordinated in the COBR (pronounced and often miswritten COBRA) meeting which includes not just the PM and medics etc but also the head of all the devolved administrations, including SNP's Nicola Sturgeon, Labour's Mark Drakeford and the DUP's Arlene Foster. After the COBR meeting on Monday they all came out giving the same message and saying we're doing the right things - no partisan snipings at all.
I've never seen Sturgeon and Johnson agree on anything ever. Wonder if that itself is a sign of the apocalypse.
