PS I think you misunderstood the numbers though, we're taking 20k on top of the 5k already taken.
Wow, if you 're good for your word the next few years you may actually take in about as many people as The Netherlands takes in this year alone.

And just putting people in camps indefinetely is NOT going to keep them 'in the region'.

So what? You're taking relatively a slightly smaller number of the tiny statistically insignificant number of people who've left to go to Europe? And that's all that matters, the world exists outside of Europe, where the 96% of refugees are.

No spending billions of pounds is what is going to help them.

Not that EU policy changes have been resolved....but the US will have to make some changes, too.

Apparently, with help from Christian activists -- Syrian Christians are making their way to Mexico, apply for refugee status, and gain automatic entry to the US. Or they use an underground railroad and get smuggled in without any paperwork. They either don't have visas or they can't be checked with the Syrian government....so it turns into a nightmare scenario where Immigration and National Security policies don't coordinate, let alone jive.

  4. #154
Um, since when do Mexicans get automatic entry to the US?

You missed the point. Our policies are written so that anyone can claim political or religious persecution in their nation of origin, and get automatic "asylum" status in the US. Seeking asylum, even without ID, isn't illegal.

Crossing borders for 'economic' reasons isn't the same thing as seeking refuge/asylum. (Unless you're coming from Cuba )

You missed the point: stop making shit up. You said Syrians are gaining automatic entry to the US through Mexico. Are you now saying that was a lie?

What I said....is that US policy is to grant "automatic entry" to anyone claiming asylum for political or religious persecution. And that anyone can claim to be a persecuted Syrian Christian, without ID....and how that's a nightmare for our border patrol/immigration/Homeland Security policies.

So...maybe a better, and more complicated question, is how will the UN change its definitions of refugees, and recommend policy changes?

I dunno about automatic entry, they are being vetted by Glenn Beck and his CIA-guys before being smuggled across the border

Fun fact about this all is that everybody is still pretending like Turkey is actually a safe country.
    Congratulations America

Yeah, I could have signed up for a conference there next summer, and that was one of the reasons I didn't (Erdogan's arrest of academics and journalists is a bigger reason).

Heh, I thought the "fun fact" was that US politicians were using economic migrants to "demonize" US immigration policy....when they could have pointed to asylum seekers (policy) instead.

    Who suggested that?

The bishops in this country are a joke, they are to the left of Marx on most issues. The previous Archbishop was nicknamed The Druid not just for his appearance.

I don't see the suggestion in that article being particularly left-wing.

Attacking the Tories is always in the interests of the bishops.

Not true, in fact I've attacked the immigration policy repeatedly and am happy to again. I voted for Cameron as my views are quite aligned with his, not the other way around.

Yes which is why I said not true. Had you put written another word like typically rather than always it would have got a different response.

Very disturbing to see Geert Wilders PVV shooting up the polls presumably on the back of this. Latest poll puts him on 37 with a lead of 18 over nearest rivals. I couldn't imagine Wilders as Dutch PM.

    Hazir care to comment?

According to 'the polls' The Netherlands' should have had Wilders government for close to a decade already. However, significantly more people say they will vote for him than there are people who actually do.
    Congratulations America

VVD were in the lead until September. I can't see Wilders having a double-digit lead ever before. Still I take your point that polls are not accurate, we'd have a Labour PM rather than a Tory majority government if they were.

So you're not concerned by PVV climbing in the polls? There's no election due for a while yet is there?

I'm somewhat concerned but they always lead (big) in the polls between elections, IIRC last election they were polled to get double the seats they actually ended up with. Partially, I think, because he's practically campaigning all the time while other parties might be busy with governing, and it's easy to shout things; and partially because I suspect a lot of people might agree with some of the stuff he's shouting but don't actually want him to govern.

That said it appears taking refugees in is not a popular opinion and foreigners in general have always been his thing, so who knows.

Interestingly pretty much everyone I've talked with about this said that yes, there will be problems, but yes, we should take them in. Including drunk football fans I had never met before, which to be honest surprised me a little. And he taught me that during WWI we had a million refugees (on a population of 6.2 million), I never knew it was that many.

I am concerned about the PVV in the way that they poison everything they touch, but I am less concerned about their potential to wield real power.

As for the refugee crisis, I am appalled by the sheer incompetence of the Slovenian government. At least the Hungarian government was willing to go whole hog on the 'we don't give a fuck' thing and shut their border with razor wire. The Slovenians made up some non-existent Austro-German restriction, then imposed one of their own making sure that thousands of people would get stuck in the western Balkan. Mostly in places where there were no facilities to shield them from the cold or the rain or distribute even the most basic necessities. A group of close to thousand people were actually fenced in the cold and the rain outside for close to 24 hours in the zone between Croatia and Slovenia on no other pre-text than that the Slovenian capacity for sheltering people was exhausted. As if these people could not have been put on buses or trains (that for no appearant reason no longer cross borders in that part of Europe) and have transited the country in under 3 hours. Straight to Austria, where the government actually did bother to prepare.

Not quite in the same category but still pretty ridiculous was the announcement that the UK would try to bring 1000 refugees to the UK 'before Christmas'. Like, wow, refugees as the newest feel-good prop for a holiday that says them little to nothing?
    Congratulations America

Christmas is a time period that is typically used as a marker. Its just another way of saying x amount by the end of the year since nothing generally happens between Christmas and New Year. It's just standard speak I don't think its meant to be positive or negative.

It's an important date for none Christians. It's the date after which you don't have to listen to George Michael for another 9-11 months again.

The majority of which had returned to Belgium about a year after arriving. It was 1915 then.

And how does that make the impact of 1 million people suddenly entering your territory any less? Especially if you consider that the Netherlands at the time was a relatively backward and poor country?

I think the whole Dublin agreement is dead and should not be revived. What seemed like a good idea at the beginning turned out to be nothing more than a means of countries attributing the problem to a limited number of frontline states. The EU directive which puts the risk of the evaluation of whether or not a person is a bona fide refugee with the airline should also be retracted. As things are not the mandated government officials are deciding which refugee can fly to safety and which refugee should try his luck on a rickety boat, but unqualified and non-mandated airline stafff.

Every drowned Syrian in the Aegean is the direct result of the violation of international obligations that all EU members have signed up to. If you are a refugee, then you should not be refused on a plane for not having the right visa. Governments should not be able to abdicate from that responsability by threathening airlines if they happen to make a mis-judgement.
    Congratulations America
