Yeah, that's where I saw it. It was too great not to share (the story, not Oliver's antics), so I had to look for a link to share.

edit: Here's the link I probably should have used. The first one has the daily show segment embedded, though.

I'm surprised that those companies don't just admit the mistake and pay up. A friend of mine was accidentally charged for a mortgage of a couple of tonnes, and that was fixed within a few days with an apology (and a luxury pen set).

He was rather surprised to check his bank account and it was more than €100.000 in the red

Well, the gist of the story is that a couple who didn't have a mortgage with BoA (or anyone at all, for that matter) got a foreclosure notice from BoA. Had trouble finding a lawyer willing to take the case, but eventually found a guy who'd been a lawyer for 8 months. Fought it in court, and won. Got awarded $3,000 for their efforts (and to cover their legal fees)... but BoA didn't pay. So they continued the legal process with the county sheriff (getting a "writ of execution" - basically a document saying that we're taking as much of your stuff as we can get our hands on, in lieu of the payment you owe us), hired a moving van and a couple of repo men, and went down to the bank branch that issued the bogus foreclosure. With the sheriff overseeing things, they hauled off everything that wasn't nailed down.

    And good for them.

I said it during the last election, and it may come true a little sooner then I expected. Sooner or later we are going to end up with a president who grew up playing Pokemon.

At last night's Republican debate, presidential candidate Herman Cain quoted a 'poet' as saying "life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it's never easy when there's so much on the line." These are lyrics from the theme song to the movie "Pokemon: The Movie 2000."

I remain baffled by the numerous "guests" that show up from time to time. It's really weird. 50-60 "guests", and I'm the only member on-line. Someone tried to explain that to me once, but I still don't get it. It's fucking strange.

  12. #1662
GGT on line, sole "member", with 58 guests. That is just plain weird. WTF does that even mean?

A paedophile who was said to have raped one of his victims up to 400 times has been jailed.

Prosecutors told Exeter Crown Court David Brown treated the girl like "a sexual plaything".

The 62-year-old, of Highland Terrace, Uffculme, was convicted of 15 rapes and two indecent assaults on two young girls when they were as young as nine...

...Sentencing Brown, Recorder Bartlett told him he would serve 12 years in jail, but would remain on licence for a further 10 years when he was freed.

Meh. At his age, it's practically a life sentence anyway. (Plus, how do you rape someone 400 times?? That's kinda WTF-worthy, right there.)

You usually get a third of the sentence off for good behavior, which means he'll get out when he's 70. The sentence works out to about 9 months per rape conviction (and 8 days per rape).

Right, and ~house arrest for the other 13. Granted, the British judicial system is insane - 6 months for stealing a few bucks worth of bottled water, 9 months for raping a 9 year old - but in this case, I don't see it making much of a difference.

And again, I think it's really reaching to say that it's even possible to "rape" someone 400 times... it's just a grossly overblown word to use in a case like that, like when those PETA morons do the whole fur is murder, meat is murder crap. It's only even technically accurate in the loosest sense of word, and it cheapens the phrase for instances when it's actually applicable. Stupid sensationalistic crap.

Unless I'm mistaken, "on licence" means on parole, so there won't be any house arrest. These crimes took place over a 20 year period, so it's not unreasonable to assume that there were 400 acts of actual rape. Also, the British definition of rape requires penetration.

The utter lack of people boiled to death does seem somewhat perplexing
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

I wasn't really talking about penetration vs... whatever else, more about "rape," to me being more along the lines of "shut up or I'll cut you, bitch!" instead of 300-something unlawful, but non-violent acts of penile penetration. Gotta figure that by the 100th time (if not much earlier), it stops being a crime involving violence or the threat of violence, and thus, the word "rape" seems like too harsh a descriptor.

And, it's not like we can throw the book at someone who committed a rape 20 years ago over here either, mind you... though, at least we generally do better than 9 months/charge, so that's something.

Not understanding you here. If the victim stops fighting out of sheer exhaustion or is simply mentally broken in from the earlier rapes, it ceases to be rape?

Sounds about right. Among other things. "No means no." "Whatever, get it over with" doesn't mean no, or something like that.

Perhaps it’s not that surprising that a mother in Menifee, California, asked the Menifee Union School District to ban all copies of the 10th edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary after her child stumbled across the term “oral sex.” What is surprising, indeed horrifying, is that district officials immediately complied with her request, and pulled all dictionaries off classroom shelves throughout the Southern California school district, which serves 9,000 kids, kindergarten through eighth grade...

FYI. That entire story is false. Someone tried to talk it up on Reddit a few weeks ago and they managed to figure it out quick enough. I'm assuming its some sort of facebook and email spam by this point considering it happened damn near 2 years ago.

(Old as hell, but just stumbled across the link today.)

Swedish woman murdered by drunken elk, not sober husband.

Speaking of drunken Elks, this in the news yesterday:

A homeowner in southern Sweden got a shock when he found a drunken elk stuck in his neighbour's apple tree.

The moose was apparently on the hunt for fermenting apples when she lost her balance and became trapped in the tree.

Per Johansson, from Saro near Gothenburg, found the elk making a roaring noise in the garden next door.

He called the emergency services, who helped him free the boozed-up beast by sawing off branches. She spent the night recovering in the garden.

The next day she took herself off into the woods with her hangover.

Drunken elk are not an uncommon sight in Sweden during autumn, when there are plenty of apples about.

Other residents of Saro had seen the elk on the loose in the preceding days.

Mr Johansson said the elk appeared to be sick, drunk, or "half-stupid", the Associated Press reported.
