I have a phone with two turkish lines, and a second phone with a dutch line. I think I have 6 phonenumbers all of which I use on a regular basis. But a lot of people don't know that because I have a pretty good system for tunneling calls through to where I am.
Why on earth do you want to carry around two 'dedicated' phones? Let alone have need for 6 different phone numbers? How many lives are you leading, anyway? Is it really worth all that hassle just to keep A from knowing about B? Or is that part of the thrill?

Makes it harder for the government to track you down... plus, with 6 numbers, you can misrepresent your true strength, so when they come to raid your booby-trapped hideout (expecting a squad of heavily armed malcontents rather than just one guy), you can blow up a whole SWAT team instead of just one lousy beat cop.

    Or so I've heard.

If you're frequently in different countries, costs get massive if you don't use local phones in each country. And maybe one for work, one for private? I already use 3 numbers on a regular basis, my cell, my work, and at my parents. If I had a home line I'd probably use that too to make 4..

I'm not 'frequently in different countries'. Area codes maybe, but then again---I don't feel the need to use a cell phone very often. It's not attached to my hip or ear, and I can go days without talking on the phone, chit chat bugs me.

Cain, you're just kooky. I hope.

hazir is a freak but cell phones with multiple sim slots are common over seas.

    echo
i20 and i75 have full service
covington, villa rica and carrollton have shit service
the varsity in downtown atlanta had full service but i did not test underground

The whole idea of having two sim slots was born of business considerations, but is clearly also meant to facilitate double lives.

It doesn't do a very good job, though. Too easy to forget which SIM card you're accessing, and before you know it, instead of calling Melanie for a night of wine-ing, dining and 69ing, you're accidentally blowing up your garage. Much better to have two phones - one for calling up women, and a completely separate one for detonating explosives.

You aren't, but he is, and you asked why one would need two phones, and I answered. So you probably won't need two phones, no. I have plenty of friends who spend weekends in the Netherlands while studying weekdays in Belgium too, they almost all have two phones too. And you can use it to keep work related and private calls separate.

Exactly, you don't want to be paying through your nose for simple calls about where to meet up. But you also don't want to be forced to tell people per situation which number to use. So you give people the number that's most geared to them and they never know the difference when I rerout them. But I sure do; in my phone bills. I used to run up humongous phonebills, now all in all I don't pay more than €40 a month, and that includes a lot of international calls to and from my mobile phone. Last time I checked I had like 900 minutes of talktime from my dutch mobile to Istanbul. Because of the network of phonenumbers I can use I paid €22,-- and that included 100 messages even.
    Congratulations America

High five, we killed this thread.

Anywho, iPad is three iPod videos glues together and it's as useful as the Bible.

Nurses could use it as an electronic clipboard to check and update patient charts on their rounds. Although if you drop a clip board, it doesn't stop working permanently... But lots of professions could use it like that - workers who do preventative maintenance on facility equipment, people taking inventory and making orders in any kind of retail, utility meter readers, scientists doing field work or even taking data in the lab, doctors, psychologists...

Have you seen the electronic equipment most of those fields use?

The ipad doesn't have near the durability for some of the applications you're suggesting.

Versions of that have been in use for years already. Makes more sense in a clinic or office setting, so the nurse has access to medical records and histories in every room as they flit about. They also have digital consent forms downloaded, sign with a stylus, can get paper copy printed out at the receptionist.

Some of it. Note it tends to be highly specific to the task whereas the eyepad has the potential to do all the tasks and more.

I think I alluded to that in my post.

Anyway, I'm not saying the ayepad is the best or ideal tool for any of those. I'm just admitting the thing could be useful. Hell, even the bible's useful for some stuff. (foot rest, paper weight, manipulating billions of people, etc... )

You're admitting a touchpad could be useful, not the ipad.

So other touch pads can be useful, but the iPad can't? It can't be useful in any possible way?

That all depends on the AppStore approval process wouldn't it?

I was pointing out that you're not showing why an ipad would be useful, you're showing why a touchpad in general would be useful. In fields that largely already use touchpads.

    Uh, no.

My doctor's been using a tablet PC to take patient notes on, print prescriptions wirelessly, access lab results, etc. for years. The reason that he's able to do this with a tablet PC (and not a crApple) is because PCs allow their owners to... install *real* applications on them.

An iPad is a tablet PC without the PC part. Useful for wiping your ass with, and that's about it.

Correct. And again, the reason is that other touchpads generally allow owners to configure them, install whatever they see fit on them, and so on. In contrast to an iPad, which is just a shiny screen you can't do anything with, because you're really just renting it from Steve Jobs. But you can walk around looking like a douche with it. I wouldn't consider that a "useful" function, however.

Not all touchpads are iPads, but all Ayepads are touchpads.

Regardless of how much you hate Apple, or how crappy their product restrictions are, and whatever else, it's still ok to recognize this thing could be useful in some circumstances.

    No, it's really not.

Because, again, anything an iPad could conceivably be useful for would be done better by a tablet PC (or even a smartphone).

Holy fuck - an *actual* keyboard! What a novel concept! And yet another way that a fucking 4 year old phone is superior to Steve Jobs' latest shiny turd.

You still aren't connecting the dots, but you are getting closer. The circumstances you keep laying out require certain hardware, touchscreen tablets. Based on that assumption alone, you then extend your claim that the ipad qualifies for being useful in those circumstances, because the ipad is a touchscreen tablet like device.

    That is incorrect.

While you have the hardware angle covered, you're missing the software angle. The software that has to be Apple approved. The Apple approved software, that thus far, does not include any applications that are able to perform in the fields and circumstances that you are laying claim to.

Now if the ipad was built around the Mac OS (like the fanboys originally hoped for), instead of the iphone OS, you wouldn't be looking so stupid right now.
