I disliked the simultaneous turns on civ4 multiplayer, because you ended up having an advantage if you had fewer cities (fewer things to build, so you arrived at commanding your units quicker). But with a lot of players, turns after each other takes a lot of time..Originally Posted by NGS

It seems co-op multiplayer vs. AI would be the better option. Takes less time, not as aggressive or favored to the vets.

Well, at least the crashes happen at consistent times, so I can mostly avoid them.
Trying to open the Civilopedia crashes the game, so that's a no-no.
Loading any previous savegame while the game is running is a no-no, always crashes.
But so long as I keep tinkering along without the Civilopedia and without resorting to saving and loading, it mostly runs ok.

Using Directx 9, the game only crashed once. Something to do with the gfx card. Thank Zod for autosave.
I never loaded a game ingame, but I have made several trips to Civilopedia. Alt-tabbed once, which took a lot of time to process, but didn't crash.

Just crashed 3 times in a row. Other people with NVidia card seem to have the same problem.

No crashes, can alt-tab, open save files in game, everything. But I've only played about 15 hours.
Well, I'm done with it, for now, unless we do a multiplayer. I probably will hit it again at sometime.

But then I play Huge maps on Marathon timescale. With only Domination and Space Race (or Science or whatevs) as victory options.
And keep restarting with new maps after several hours cos I'm not happy with how things're going, or with the nation I've chosen. I'm quite fussy I guess.
Yesterday I got quite far with Greece, only to have my arse handed to me by the fucking Siamese. I hardly had any units at all, just an arthritic archer unit and a geriatric pikeman.
Still loving it though.

I started several games and couldn't make myself happy with any of them. It could have been my mood yesterday. I've won 4 games in 37 hours - the first was just the game from the tutorial though, so it was too fucking easy, so we'll make it 3 games. I think marathon would feel entirely too slow.

And I'm still having a ball with the game. Still making the mistake of playing ciV like cIV and expanding and letting my cities grow, so now in the Renaissance era, I'm having money/happiness issues. Next game, I should keep growth capped and gear towards production or specialists.
What level are you guys playing? I'm on Prince right now, which is a bit of a challenge but still not that hard, so I think King would be a nice challenge.
I'm playing Large/Epic. Will go Huge/Marathon after this. I like to have one tier of units to last at least one big war instead of upgrading warriors to swords to longswords in the scope of one war.

Hmmm. I like the slow build-up of the game - being able to plan things properly - layout - strategy - discovering new things on an gradual basis .
Single Civ games are always weeks-long affairs for me ...
I guess it's no surprise I don't like frantic FPS type games. I'm too slow-witted.

Have an ageing nVid 8800GTX with 768MB mammaries. It's probably the bottleneck in my 4 yr old set up - Q6600 Quad proc & 4GB RAM.

Yep - think I need to rethink my strategy. I too go all out for expansion - tend to buy Settlers as gold isn't too hard to come by - and towns don't grow while youre building settlers.
So I expand and expand. But then I'm very widespread, exposed and weak, which is why I think the Siamese overran me so easily in my last game.

I have the 8600 GT, and it seemed to work for me. Beta is called 260.63. Not sure if it's my imagination but it seemed to run smoother as well.

Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"
I started small and easy to gently climb the learning curve. Then I go for the big and difficult games when I'm more comfortable. I bet you could analyze a personality just knowing how one approaches a new strategy game.

Your luck, I think - the one game I played One of my opponents had three cities that could only be reached either over the sea or through a one-tile gap in a mountain ridge.

Restarted again.
Got to about AD600 with the Cheese-eating surrender monkeys, on Huge map with Marathon time.
Each end of turn was taking around 40 seconds, which was getting ridiculous. Fed up waiting. Figured my creaking system just takes too long to process the turns of 8 other nations and 20 city-states on the Huge map.
Gawd I can't afford to upgrade again.
So trying another game, with the Russkies, but on Large rather than Huge map. Sticking to Marathon time.
Crashes seem to have resolved themselves totally - not sure if it's because of reduction of some of the gphx settings. No crashes on Civilopedia, on game load, or on alt-tabbing yesterday. Very odd.
Playing the rooskies as well. Was looking forward to use that double amount of horsies and iron for a large army just to find out that I couldn't afford it. Duhr! Oh well, the extra hammers are nice. And that Krepost (sp?) thingy is really handy.
edit: Although now I discovered banking, expanded the empire and building trade routes and built the Macho Picacho, I'm having some leeway and will finally be able to field some serious shit.
