Thread: Arizona Gov Proposes Fat Tax For Welfare Recipients

  1. #91
Look at how Lewk uses the word "average" here and compare that with his interpretation of it in the Voucher thread.

I mean, the guy may be clueless about the meaning of the word, but at least he's consistently clueless. That a plus right?

Consistence is important for a number of reasons.
    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

The bureaucrats who knew average date-of-death rose from ~65 to 75+ over the decades, but didn't modify or restructure things very well. This was "foreseen" a long time ago, based on high-tech medicine and 80 million baby boomers, and everyone knew.

    Lack of discipline. Stupidity. Laziness.

Earlier you stated the cause was "making bad decisions". Only stupidity (or ignorance) would fall in that category. Now you've added lack of discipline and laziness? Those might be character traits, but also things that could be improved with better education, role models, and a society that gives a damn.

This one's for Lewk: in your Texan neck 'o the woods, I'd say it takes a particular discipline and active effort to take a bus route, with transfers and walking, just to get to the motel/restaurant/crop field. Then spend at least 8 hours doing physical labor. Then take the same bus route back home, dog tired, preparing dinner and helping kids with homework. I can see how beans and rice, or beanie weanies might be on the menu. Especially if rent and utilities eat a big chunk of income.

I'd like to see YOU try and get ahead, provide for yourself and your family, making Texas minimum wage. Without using the cheaper carbohydrate or HFCS foods that can cause weight gain.

There are very few proper Calvinists left in these modern times, whatever labels the mainstream churches use. John Calvin would be absolutely horrified at supposedly "Calvinist" churches like the Presbyies, but he was a very intolerant and inflexible theologian.

I think EyeKhan was looking for motivators unique to the poor.

Calvinism is still pretty big here (relatively). Depends on what you call 'proper', of course, and strictness varies between churches. Around where my parents live it's not unusual at all to have inivitations end with Deo Volente, for example.

That's three, but ok. Why are poor people undisciplined, stupid and lazy? (Are they all this way? What about the ones that work but are fat? Is that discipline? But what if they work, are fat, and live in an urban food desert - that is they would have to drive 45 minutes to get to the nearest grocery store, and that store sells healthy food for double what the unhealthy food costs and they don't make that much money even though they work 55 hours a week...?)

This is the man who thinks Nobel laureates (in the natural sciences, even) are dumb and lazy for not being CEOs instead. I think your questions will provide no intelligible response.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Didn't you know? The vast majority of the time, the amount of money you have directly correlates with your work ethic and intellect, and the situation you were born into has little affect on your ability to earn money.

Oh please. People can inherit money sure, but for the majority of the population they have to work to be middle or upper class.

Maybe the middle. But I'll need a source for the upper.

See. The way he contrast this to the poor is to me far more offensive than writing "then" instead of "than", "paordy" or not using the quote buttons. Bubble boy here has grown up with a family safety net and is completely and utterly incapable of thinking or feeling empathy outside the bubble.

    4) Don't Accept Economic Support from Your Parents once Outside the Home
Sounds painful doesn't it? It's a fact that has taught the wealthy how to earn, keep, and invest money. Parents of the wealthy do not, or cannot, provide "economic outpatient care". The results are clear: The more dollars the adult children receive, the fewer they accumulate. Those who are given less are motivated to accumulate more on their own merits. An amazing fact: 80% of millionaires are first generation millionaires; they have made their money on their own, in their lifetime. Many of these folks have been immigrants to the U.S., starting out with minimal cash on hand. Work hard to learn and generate wealth-it CAN be done, and happens in America every day.
80% of millionaires are 1st generation millionaires.

Do you know where Steven got that statistic? The article has no sources.

From the book The millionaire next door, which focused on sole-proprietorship businesses. Which means you're going to get a lot of "rich in land, poor in food" type of false positives.
Even if you ignore the bad math in reaching that number, that still leaves 1 in 5 millionaires an unearned fortune.

    That was beautiful.

    A few things to consider:

#1. If I wait for you to re-read the book before I get a few simple answers/ opinions, I will have forgotten what I was asking. My brain is damaged, remember?

#2. I am an American. My culture instills in and demands from its people instant gratification. I cannot do anything but expect that, even if you are from an inferior culture.

#3. I read this book based on YOUR recommendation. YOU said it was good and suggested I would like it. I gave you something I give few people: the respect of picking up and reading a book you suggested was a good read. I should think you would be a little more appreciative of the hours of my ever dwindling time I bet on your tastes.

#4. Given that this book was suggested to me as a good read by you, one can only conclude you were prepared to discuss some of its oddities and its not-quite-clear and somewhat unhappy ending, which one could only assume you would be able to remember since you enjoyed the book so much you staked your reputation upon it by recommending I read it.
