If I had to take a 30 minute+ each way train commute to work every day then I might be very tempted to go for this. I can't see any other major reasons for it though. Since I drive, that rules that one out.

It's not a secret. In fact, you can't miss it. We have two wireless networks on campus: Guest and Restricted. Anyone can connect to Guest. It's like the networks you find in airports or Starbucks that direct you to a login screen to get your credentials. You input your ID and password, and it directs you to a page to automatically set up access to the Restricted network. On iPhones and iPod touches, it directs you to a page that installs a profile for your device. I'm now wondering if the page doesn't redirect iPad users. The devices all run iPhone OS, so I'm imagining that it does.

Searching for "iPhone" on the university's home page brings this up as a result:
    http://www.utexas.edu/its/news/072008/iphone20.php

I suppose we can amend it to say that it works with iPhones, iPod touches, and now iPads. I'm not really sure what else can be done short of placing an announcement on the home page.
    Your search had no results.

Well, I thought it was a cute gadget. Untill I realised that it's simply not what it pretends to be: a computer. I really really really was shocked to find out that you need to connect this thing to another computer to keep it up to date. I mean, I know these Apple people have some funny ideas about what people should be allowed to do with the things they rent from Steve. But this really takes the toast.

By all accounts it is ~100X better in every regard than a Kindle, which is now $259, but was $370 when it came out (I know, because my father was in the hospital for ~ a month when the kindle first came out. We looked into buying him one, then decided it was an extravagant waste of money that would irk him). So, as a FAR better version of the kindle, which is all I ever considered it to be, it seems priced accordingly, especially after the new product price ages down.

Me, I won't buy one. Not a technophobe at all, but I'm also not a tech bandwagoner. I get something when I need it. I didn't even bother with a cell phone until I went on the transplant list.

God, that 'I don't have a cellphone' thing still exists in the US ? The people I hang out with have AT LEAST one cellphone. The question isn't if you need one, but who goes on which line.
    Congratulations America

Apple's not even trying to hide the fact that they want control of every aspect of the user's experience. Blocking java and flash was a dick move, theres no argument there.

So if you're a java or flash programmer, and want to compile your program for the iphone, Apple has a new developer agreement like reads like this: FUCK YOU.

We're getting multitasking on the iPhone (and iPad etc)

I read somewhere that the multitasking is a bit limited, though obviously now they are catching up on some of the functionality limitations.

The advertising program they announced bugs me for the reasons Ominous brought up -- they are trying to use their install base to build an ad network. Competition in advertising is good, as it keeps prices down and helps drive innovation and (in some cases) better ads. I'm not saying Apple shouldn't do what they are trying to do. But Apple's model seems to encourage the creation of closed proprietary apps with ad revenue, instead of helping publishers make money from mobile content on the open mobile web. It's another of those "pretty and closed" vs "freewheeling and open" things.

A glorified, tasteless example of manipulative marketing, designed to set the thralls of Apple consumerism into another buying orgy.

My dad actually doesn't have one. Not sure why, but I think he likes being unreachable when not at home or at work.

If you go back through Atlanta, let me know how it goes. Got a friend coming to visit at the end of the month and she's on the same carrier but is worried about not having signal.

Seriously, popping up here after a while to do this isn't cool. The folks complaining seem to recognize this and I have to agree with them -- please don't troll here like this.

So he has to do another 4500+ words to explain his return, now? I know communities thrive on drama but come on people, just let the guy post if he wants to post

He doesn't, but dropping in to post in an oldish thread with a personal attack about something that came up weeks ago is...well, low.

  21. #81
It was a stupid post but not unusually so, and I'm particularly at loathe to just willy-nilly agree to the noises made about his recent posting as if they're some kind of valid criticism of ']['ear's contributions; people are mostly just 'tee hee look he's posting when he said he wouldn't'.

If Tear makes himself look like a tit due to his actions, leave him to it. Further more, if you actually believed he was leaving in the first place, then some of you are not as smart as i once thought.

  23. #83
I'm not concerned with him coming back -- of course he was going to come back. The issue is when a fight/taunt from one thread begins to irrelevantly spill over into other threads. Because then it just sucks everyone's attention and derails threads with stupidity.

  24. #84
I thought this sub-forum was for derailing towards stupidity

There's usually a train-track that can be followed toward the stupid though.

Tear's sudden post there wasn't on that track, it was an old and rusty diesel engine sitting on a unused, weed-ridden sideline as the shiny stupid train went careering past.

Trolling, in other words. I agree with Dread.

Glad to see you haven't abandoned your committment to being a dick.

    or

    So much for fresh starts?

    or

Save your money, or get a better job, and you can have a big house too some day?

    or

Just being misunderstood again, because in real life people actually like you?

    or

I dunno, I can't think of anything else and its not important. Is it?

EDIT: What was this thread about again? Aw damn, he got away with it!

Hey! I have a cell phone. Not turned it on since sometime in January. It's a simple pay-as-you-go phone, just for emergencies. Not only do I not like texting, I don't like feeling tied to a phone (or a computer for that matter). Just so someone can call me while driving or I'm away from home? No thanks. It's ENJOYABLE to not be reachable 24 hours a day.

However, my kids have cell phones, so they can feel connected to both parents even when we're separated. I do wish the school wouldn't rely so much on instant contact, though. The nurse called home first and left a message, then called the ex's cell and left a message, then called the emergency contact neighbor. Because ten minutes had passed, and he had a sore throat.

Apple is to delay the international release of its touchscreen tablet computer, the iPad, by a month.

It will now launch the device around the world at the end of May, and will begin accepting pre-orders on 10 May.

In a statement the company blamed demand for the device in the US, which it said had been "suprisingly strong".

When the iPad launched in the US, 300,000 units were sold on its first day. Apple claims it delivered 500,000 in the first week of its release.

"Demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks," said Apple.

The first iPad models are selling for between $499 and $829 (£328 to £545) in the US. They have wi-fi but not 3G connectivity.
Selling like hot cakes in the US then. The rest of us plebs have to wait till end of May.

    Or not.

Cool marketing anyway, create scarcity of your own product and people will feel a bigger urge to buy it.

I have a phone with two turkish lines, and a second phone with a dutch line. I think I have 6 phonenumbers all of which I use on a regular basis. But a lot of people don't know that because I have a pretty good system for tunneling calls through to where I am.
    Congratulations America
