People make mistakes. Most mistakes are rectifiable as long as one is willing to pay a high enough cost. Aren't you meant to be the "people make mistakes for factors outside of their control and we should help them" liberal? Or are you only nice to people you don't know?

I have no problem with hard truths, but I don't see where my attitude is flawed. My expectation is that this is gonna be a very difficult task, not some cakewalk I can just walk into with no problem. If you're basing your judgement off of my GPA, my reply is twofold: I found I greatly disliked engineering, my original goal, and I was a poor student in my first two years. Bluntly, I'm educated, in decent shape, and have skills that the military requires. Why do you think they wouldn't want me?

Man, I'm just curious. I have absolutely no relevant advice to contribute and little else to offer beyond encouragement in the search for happiness and self-fulfilment

Bolded parts are the answers already within you. Read your own words, then read them again.
Your attitude isn't "flawed". Your main focus is clearly Military Service, with a frustration in how to get there, using the skills and education you already have and can offer as strengths. (Hint, it might be your Poli-Sci and History focus that's more important, regardless of your grades, not Engineering or Music).
<Anecdote: I know a young man whose life path was always military service, in some capacity. His parents tried to dissuade him during HS years, putting him on on the academic/college track early on. After graduation he applied to all the "top" universities and colleges...as well as West Point. He was accepted everywhere he applied, and was one signature away from West Point. But his folkspressuredconvinced him to use his talents and skills in corporate American instead.
Six years later...after a degree in Economics and working an Executive track job with great salary, benefits, and promising "upward mobility"...he finally decided to follow his heart, and signed up with the Marines. His father was particularly disappointed, saying he'd wasted a $200,000 degree, and his entire future.
His Officer Commission ceremony was very moving. Happiest and proudest group I've ever witnessed. Even his old man finally realized, reluctantly, that it takes a special kind of character, motivation, and discipline to follow that path. Against all odds or nay-sayers.>
