Ironically, the food is getting really expensive in pick-your-own days in farms here in New England (Massachusetts). It used to be much cheaper (3-5 times) on farms than in the supermarket, but now it's in many cases more expensive. The reason why people still go to the farms is (a) for the experience and (b) some of the supermarket produce is of poor quality, especially certain fruits and vegetables.
Here they have roadside stands/sheds where the farms sell direct for the same cost as the markets pay. Some of the workers accept product in lieu of cash payment, and sell from their trucks along the road. I had forgotten about going to the farms/orchards as a child in Ohio, an experience I much enjoyed. Now I miss sharing that with my kids
Sorry to here that the costs have become so high for this in your area, sounds like price gouging to me.
Of course I have to include the added costs for home canning and pickling. But still, it's cheaper and healthier this way, plus the food tastes so much better.

The prices are high everywhere in the area, not just one farm. Some places are slightly cheaper. But yes, the food is much better; I agree.
