There's something I neglected to tell you all this time ("executive privilege", but hey I'm declassifying a lot of things these days). Back around the time of the /r/creepshots debacle, I wrote to /u/spez for advice. I had met him shortly after I had taken the job, and found him to be a great guy. Back in the day when reddit was small, the areas he oversaw were engineering, product, and the business aspects - those are the same things I tend to focus on in a company (each CEO has certain areas of natural focus, and hires others to oversee the rest). As a result, we were able to connect really well and have a lot of great conversations - talking to him was really valuable.


Well, when things were heating around the /r/creepshots thing and people were calling for its banning, I wrote to him to ask for advice. The very interesting thing he wrote back was "back when I was running things, if there was anything racist, sexist, or homophobic I'd ban it right away. I don't think there's a place for such things on reddit. Of course, now that reddit is much bigger, I understand if maybe things are different."


I've always remembered that email when I read the occasional posting here where people say "the founders of reddit intended this to be a place for free speech." Human minds love originalism, e.g. "we're in trouble, so surely if we go back to the original intentions, we can make things good again." Sorry to tell you guys but NO, that wasn't their intention at all ever. Sucks to be you, /r/coontown - I hope you enjoy voat!


The free speech policy was something I formalized because it seemed like the wiser course at the time. It's worth stating that in that era, we were talking about whether it was ok for people to post creepy pictures of women taken legally in public. That's shitty, but it's a far cry from the extremes of hate that some parts of the site host today. It seemed that allowing creepers to post (anonymized) pictures of women taken in public, in a relatively small subreddit that never showed up on the front page, was a small price to pay for making it clear that we were a place welcoming of all opinions and discourse.


Having made that decision - much of reddit's current condition is on me. I didn't anticipate what (some) redditors would decide to do with freedom. reddit has become a lot bigger - yes, a lot better - AND a lot worse. I have to take responsibility.


But... the most delicious part of this is that on at least two separate occasions, the board pressed /u/ekjp to outright ban ALL the hate subreddits in a sweeping purge. She resisted, knowing the community, claiming it would be a shitshow. Ellen isn't some "evil, manipulative, out-of-touch incompetent she-devil" as was often depicted. She was approved by the board and recommended by me because when I left, she was the only technology executive anywhere who had the chops and experience to manage a startup of this size, AND who understood what reddit was all about. As we can see from her post-resignation activity, she knows perfectly well how to fit in with the reddit community and is a normal, funny person - just like in real life - she simply didn't sit on reddit all day because she was busy with her day job.


Ellen was more or less inclined to continue upholding my free-speech policies. /r/fatpeoplehate was banned for inciting off-site harassment, not discussing fat-shaming. What all the white-power racist-sexist neckbeards don't understand is that with her at the head of the company, the company would be immune to accusations of promoting sexism and racism: she is literally Silicon Valley's #1 Feminist Hero, so any "SJWs" would have a hard time attacking the company for intentionally creating a bastion (heh) of sexist/racist content. She probably would have tolerated your existence so long as you didn't cause any problems - I know that her long-term strategies were to find ways to surface and publicize reddit's good parts - allowing the bad parts to exist but keeping them out of the spotlight. It would have been very principled - the CEO of reddit, who once sued her previous employer for sexual discrimination, upholds free speech and tolerates the ugly side of humanity because it is so important to maintaining a platform for open discourse. It would have been unassailable.


Well, now she's gone (you did it reddit!), and /u/spez has the moral authority as a co-founder to move ahead with the purge. We tried to let you govern yourselves and you failed, so now The Man is going to set some Rules. Admittedly, I can't say I'm terribly upset.

Today I saw a little boy, about two years old, wearing rubber boots in the mid-day heat. He reminded me of my own son who wore snow boots almost every day, even during summer months. It made me so happy that I felt compelled to say something positive to his adult companion/guardian. She smiled, said she was British, and explained she'd bought the boots for her best friend's kid because that's the British way....and then we had a laugh about the American toddler wearing rubber boots made in China.

Work approved my 3 main requests for programming during the next school year. A MakerBot, LEGO Mindstorm v3, and HearthStone on all the tablets.

I'm not sure that a MakerBot is the best choice among all the 3D printers available, considering the "recent" problems.

Their newest generation of printers seems to suffer from massive technical problems, several of them related to their new extruder.

The licensing states that you're not allowed to open the extruder or you'll lose your warranty. However, the same extruder becomes blocked quite often by partially-melted materials or material which has solidified inside the extruder. I've seen figures quoted that this happens up to every 3rd print.

Which means that you then have to receive a new extruder by mail which takes time. Plus, guess what happens when your warranty is over? These particular extruders are NOT cheap.

They also laid off 20% of their staff in April.

Considering the other issues they had, I wouldn't really trust them. The lawsuit even made the news over here.

Edit: Oh, and one more thing - if the extruder actually works, its lifetime is only about 200 hours. With a larger print taking up to 10 hours, this means that you could print a bit more than 20 times and then have to purchase a new extruder. Which comes at $175.

Pretty sure we are getting Makerbot 2s. Thats the version the nearby school uses and what downtown uses. I wouldn't get new shit before downtown did.

As I get older, the things that make me "happy" get simpler. Waking up to another day means I didn't die in my sleep, and helps me shrug off the pains that kept me from getting a good night's sleep! I can find some "happiness" by dragging my tired ass to the coffee maker, next to the kitchen window, forcing me to watch the morning sunrise and a new day approaching.

I haven't been in a very long time, but I think not - I just remembered that one and, of course, the bit with the carving coming to life that has gotten a lot of people typing angry words since June.

My memories of the show is that it is beyond cheesy, has a lot of inspire pride in America bits (seriously, even the glorifying the confederacy bit ends that way, though it is pretty terrible and I've heard rednecks boo at the reunification), and a hell of a lot of fun to go to. If it weren't so damned hot I'd be tempted to go since I keep reading people talking about it.

Well I watched them climb it on bikes on teevee But I have cycled in the mountains in the past, views like that were the best thing about it. Best view I ever cycled up would be this one, i think.

I've had many ideas for inventions and apps over the years, and never really gone beyond the early stages of their development. About a year ago I came up with an idea that fired up my imagination like few others have, but I shelved it. A few months later someone else posted about a similar idea on a forum, but that didn't push me to get started on development. Just the other day, something happened (combination of time, energy, support, people and seeing another reasonably well-developed idea nabbed by someone else) and now, though we're a couple of months behind, I have found a couple of people who can help make this idea reality. I have nfi if it will work but I think the idea is sound and everyone who's heard the first sentence of the product description has immediately said, "Omg, that's brilliant, I want it!" so I'm very excited and of course also terrified early days so still very hush-hush but I needed to vent my excitement somewhere. More details in about six months once we need to start looking for international liaisons!!

Where did you start? I certainly could only make it if I start right at Airolo. 1000 m climb is about what my condition can do

Not sure exactly, it was more than ten years ago and my parents picked the camping and the route etc. I'd say 10, max 20 km from Airolo. So you could warm up a bit before the climb

Not sure if I could do it now, I'm not exactly in shape (read: no way I could do that again without training), but it's not a very hard climb. It's long, but if you stick to your tempo and don't force, you might be very slow, but you'll get up there as long as you just calmly keep going. What always killed me were short steep climbs (Ardennes..), or climbs that kept changing in percentage non stop. This one is just long, and you can see where you're going so that's motivating too. Then again I was in good shape then and had done 1000+m on one day before, though not in one climb. So maybe it is harder than I think it was

Downhill I took the big road though, which was excellent 70 kmph

To the north there is only one road. While on the south there are two, where the big road is cars only. That's why you peferably start on the south side.

I know what you mean, one of the hardes climb I did in one rush was this one. You see there is a 17% and a 20% part near the end.
