Thread: What is making you happy right now

So I have been shanghaied into compiling some data for a study and recently learned that one of the variables was wrong on every single patient we'd registered, meaning we (I) had to look up every single patient by patient code in a national registry, find their national ID-number (which couldn't be stored in a more accessible form due to privacy laws etc), go into their health records and find the correct values. The registry is very informative but it is also extremely frustrating and the workflow requires switching windows multiple times as well as a very large number of clicks. After a frustrating half hour of clicking back and forth I finally flipped and decided there had to be a way to minimise the number of clicks using javascript. It took much longer than it should have (because I haven't used javascript in a long time and had no idea about callbacks, because the site isn't mine and because of Satan the great Accuser and Prince of Darkness) but now I can just use Ctrl+F to have the site's own search box open up with the right input field already focused, the irrelevant fields hidden and the text a more legible size. I'm fairly sure I can tweak it to go straight to the full data view from the search box instead of having to click one more time on the search result, and by the time my own work begins I should be able to fairly easily launch a more useful initial presentation of a patient's data. It's way past my bedtime but I'm almost happy the site was so horrible

Congrats. That's the kind of stuff I spend most of my working hours thinking about (shortcuts for gathering/inputting data).

England make it through to the Women's World Cup quarter finals for the first time ever, beating Norway 2-1.

Lucy Bronze had a fantastic game, and sealed the match with one hell of a strike.

USA through to the quarters too, beating Colombia 2-0. Missed a penalty, though, with the Colombian goalie red-carded.

For Lucy Bronze's sake, I hope England doesn't finish third.

Lucy Bronze again, England 2 - 1 Canada. Through to the semi-finals, against Japan

USA v Germany in the other semi.

Brandy was getting more and more frustrated with her Android phone, so I moved her over to Windows. Got her the Lumia 640 at WalMart for $100. Amazingly snappy phone for the price. 5" 720p screen, 1gb ram, 1.2ghz quad processor, 8gb internal storage (and windows plays near perfectly with SD cards), 8mp camera. Phone like this, I don't see the point in >$500 phones. I'm going to give her a few days to make sure she can adjust, then I'm going back to get myself one.

I got an old model (new phone) of a Motorola Moto for $200. Works fine. Don't really see the use of any of the features that they have in $800 phones.

Does anyone over there actually pay the full price for new phones? Don't people generally run contracts, which grant upgrades to the latest phones for free?

I have only once bought a phone on contract, since then it's only been second-hand unlocked and with no contract.

no free upgrades. You can spread the cost of your phone over 2 years, but that greatly inflates the price of it usually. TMobile has a new lease program that costs $10 to enroll in, where you pay a percentage of the phone cost every month, then after 18 months you pay off the lease or turn the phone in (in good condition) and lease a new phone at a new percentage charge. Service over here is so horrible that Tmobile's plan is considered disruptive and innovative

People turning to unlocked or no contract phones and paying full price for them is getting a lot more popular. The Lumia 640 from WalMart is a prepaid no contract phone, but it works on Tmobile's regular service. Unlocked phones also lack all the bloatware that providers like to tie into phones, greatly reducing how much space you have and the battery life. Another reason I go for Windows over Android, Microsoft doesn't allow that kind of bloatware shit, while Android would require a rooting (if you bought a phone tied to a particular carrier).

Yeah, last time I extended my plan I got a galaxy S for, in total, only about 200 euros more (over 2 years) than a SIM only plan would have cost.

In the US, you end up paying for the phone one way or another - either in a higher contract cost through some sort of installment wheeze that isn't strictly tied to a contract, or upfront for a planless phone.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure it's the same in Europe. They just might be good at hiding it somewhere.

Yes, though they of course buy them in volume with discounts. But I did the math and that was the number. Of course I did negotiate down a bit and am an old customer they want to keep. I think the major thing is that sim only plans can be shorter so they trade a phone for long term customers. And in my case I could also stop my old contract three months earlier this way (and got a cheaper plan) whereas if I went for sim only I had to complete the old plan, plus the old one was the lease type so I'd have to pay 100 euros to keep the old phone.

You have a choice of either a discounted phone (by as much as $600) but higher monthly payments, or lower monthly payments and no discounts. The numbers are about the same if you get a pricey phone. If you get a cheaper model, it's actually more cost-effective to pay the cost up front.

I turn the game on, within two minutes two penalties (one for each side)

Sigh. An England own goal on 92 minutes gave the game to Japan 2-1.

    Not the way to lose

I'm still hoping for an English win on the back of a Bronze goal.

Excellent goal though, if she had been on the attack!

Shame though, especially since Japan didn't deserve their penalty (yet another example of why a video referee is a good thing), and hope close UK got to scoring.

Japan v US in the final then. US clear favourites.

Yeah, they're at 26% of all default subs so far that have gone private. I knew I should've gotten more snacks when I was in town earlier.

First victory over Germany in 20 attempts over 31 years.

Was the last victory in '45?

You have to wonder why Japan even bothered showing up... A hat trick in 15 minutes of a world cup final?!

Eh, could be worse. Granted, semi-final, but this gem included 4 goals in 6 minutes

Just posting the video to go with it due to its awesomeness
