Thread: What is making you happy right now

  1. #4861

Fixing up used furniture is a great thing. So much usable stuff is thrown out and wasted. The phrase 'up-cycling' has become quite prominent here, where old furniture is fixed up and had new life breathed into it. Become quite trendy in some circles.

How that relates to taking a trip to Hungary or why it's somehow demeaning for Minxie to then admire 'Minous's handiwork is beyond me.

I loved my vacation and am under no delusions as to just how unusually privileged I am to suddenly have a life that permits me to take a luxurious vacation abroad with little regard for my bank-balance.

However, what hassles millions of people would endure is kinda irrelevant. I'm grateful for and appreciative of my vacation, but that doesn't mean that I have to pretend that needlessly poor and ineffective service is somehow good. The problems we encountered at the airport were not due to poverty. They were easily avoidable problems caused by ineffective strategies (eg. multiple queues rather than one queue with several desks), avoidable mistakes from our airline (eg. not specifying that this particular airport would require us to check in again and print out new boarding passes) and an inability (as well as unwillingness) on the part of airport staff to communicate properly with surprised and confused tourists. These avoidable problems would have caused us to miss our flight had we not arrived unusually early and far earlier than usually required. They would have been far more difficult to bear for eg. my mother, who walks slowly, has difficulties communicating with foreigners and is easily stressed and confused. I don't think it's useful to make up excuses for these deficiencies.

Millions of people over the world endure deeply unfair social systems, the burden of expensive and unfair healthcare, lack of access to contraceptives and various medicines, lack of access to basic schooling for women, lack of access to top-loading washing machines etc. Yet we see you complaining about these apparent injustices and affronts routinely here on this forum, you who live in one of the most developed and privileged nations in the world. Maybe it's because some things are just bad no matter how privileged you are?

As for furniture, man, I wish we had the same system you have over there partly because it'd let me easily get rid of furniture in such a way that it'd be of use to someone else and partly because it'd let us easily get furniture that we could restore or upcycle. Restoring and upcycling furniture is what we used to do at home as a kid back when we had easy access to a place where people'd leave furniture, and it's something I enjoy because it's a fun challenge to make something really cool out of a piece of "old" furniture without really spending much money. I'm not sure what your problem is wrt this furniture business so feel free to clarify.

While I loved the fact that I saved that dresser from warping in the elements for weeks before someone burned it, hauled it away, or got fined for it; and I love the fact that my daughter was so eager to help make it her own...

I'd instantly trade the dresser, ALL OF OUR DRESSERS, to be where aimless has been.

No but seriously man that airport check-in procedure was REALLY annoying

Some airports are VERY poorly organized, I agree. They make things far more stressful than they should be.

Also, finding used stuff AND being able to take the occasional trip is awesome. I'm not sure if this makes me better or worse than our darling minxy.

So I'll just give you this gift.

It'll be the best thing to happen all year, and I have my beloved wife to thank for it, because it's her support and encouragement (and presence of mind) that's making it possible for us to pay off the debt in full.

In other happy news, I'm having a GOOD good-doctor-day. Yesterday I had a BAD good-doctor-day so this is a much appreciated development

That's what I meant to address, minx. You're keen on EQ related things, and didn't need to post your "good job" comment to OG at all...let alone frame it as some "system" unique to the US.

  8. #4868
This may come as a shock to you much like anything that is different from your personal experiences but we're not actually allowed to leave furniture on the curbside here in Sweden so that system (the one where solve people leave things and others take them) is one we don't have here. And, as for the rest, I don't think I'll let you try to leak urine all over my appreciation of a good, successful and economical restoration and an excellent "deal". God you're just weird sometimes GGT, why you insist on trying to make people feel bad for no good reason is totally beyond my comprehension. Try to be happy for and with people or something and try to get out of your head every now and then

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about "happy" kudos. You can sell your used furniture on-line, or use a consignment shop in Sweden, right? I knew you weren't trying to make anyone feel bad, but suggested you did so accidentally. Good intentions can be misinterpreted

PS what do you mean by "solve people"?

  10. #4870
"Some people" of course, it's called a "typo". I know very well you can sell used furniture online and that there are special shops for that as well. I usually sell or give my things away online on eg. equivalents of craigslist or on facebook groups dedicated to giving things away to whoever may need or want them. It's almost as if you don't realise that there is a unique benefit (with its own unique disadvantages, granted) to being able to leave something by the side of the road (or in a specially dedicated "garbage room" or whatever) where someone can find it while just walking around.

You're just the oddest person GGT, why you deliberately try to make people feel bad about non-evil things I will never understand it's worse than Tear haranguing Choobs about having a nice home. Like, what's the point? Wtf. The worst happy-threader

I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, minx. Just pointing out that you were trying too hard to make OG feel good about re-purposing furniture he found on the curb...after posting your vacation "hassles". My apologies, I thought you might be 'glad' to learn how good words/intentions can backfire, especially when it comes from a physician.

    Obviously, and also unintended.

Looked pretty damn intentional to me.

You do realize that there is a third option, which is Minx was genuinely impressed with the work Ominous did, and is even somewhat envious of his ability to find and refurbish furniture that would otherwise be thrown out.

Which just happens to be exactly what he said.

  15. #4875
Would that make you happy to say so, Loki?

I'm feeling Happy today....thanks to A/C, and the ability to afford it during heat waves. Met-Ed sent out phone and e-mail alerts a few days ago, asking its consumer clients to "conserve" energy by setting home thermostat systems to 80 degrees, and not running electric dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, or ovens during "Peak" energy times. ie, they haven't upgraded the grid, but entire cities/towns/counties still face brown-outs, outages, and shut-downs....

My "Happy" could be turned to "Unhappy" pretty quick...if I don't understand how public systems work, or why.

Sorry, but I don't consider minx as the only expression of Swedish law or culture, just because he's the main Swede on the forum.

How dare you be happy about your AC when a billion people in Africa suffer through the summer heat without a constant supply of electricity?

Or potable water, or food for that matter.

Oh give it a rest, GGT. This forum isn't the hospital, you guys aren't my patients and I've known and bickered or rejoiced with most of you for the better part of a decade. Please try to keep your issues from your past professional life separate from my leisure time. I understand very well how my post may have seemed, but I decided not to care about that and posted it anyway because my appreciation was genuine and I felt I could rely on most of you guys here on my home forum to take it in a good way rather than in a bad way.

How on earth did you ever manage to convince yourself that I'd be "glad" to be hassled about this in that condescending way on my free time in what is supposed to be a safe place where we can all ostensibly participate on equal terms? Actually, don't answer that, let's just agree to move on.

I hope to see a resurgence of interest in this:

Read what I wrote, and then read your response. How does that even begin to relate to what I said? I am not speaking in generalities about Swedish law or culture, I'm speaking specifically about Minx, and what Minx wrote.

  23. #4883
Don't debate with her on her own terms. Swedish law and Swedish culture are utterly irrelevant here. To attack someone for praising something for supposedly condescending reasons without the slightest bit of evidence is rude and anti-social. Period. GGT seems to think that all of us are like her, constantly trying to belittle people we disagree with politically.

So now that we've all gotten our annoyance out of our resp. systems maybe we can let this thread return to its original purpose

I have much to share about this day but am in too much pain to do so properly

Nah, I just suck all the joy out of everything. That's the easier explanation, and it makes people feel Happy to say so.

So yesterday while getting coffee I overheard a couple of senior consultants and an intern discussing the proper management of a dizzy patient and I felt they were going in the wrong direction so I deftly inserted myself into the conversation and nudged them in the right direction so they'd do a CT including an arterial angiography to rule out a left vertebral artery dissection rather than waiting for an MRI or for an ENT consult, head-impulse test etc. I wondered if they'd go through with it but it turns out they did and, wouldn't you know it, the patient did have a small dissection of the left vertebral artery along with a clot more proximally and a small cerebellar infarction.

It sucks a little for the patient but honestly this sort of thing is usually in the top 5 of the list of things that make doctors very happy so I'm kinda bouncy today also it's a good thing it was caught early, because there's a high risk of swift and severe deterioration in the early stages.
