    Texas Dems ain't fucking around

    ?

That says 0.03% reporting. Doesn't mean much does it?

Watching CNN's coverage, only American channel on my Sky box. I've not seen an exit poll for Texas yet?

So excited to see Bernie Bros self destruct if Biden runs away with it. But we'll have to see how the big states go.

    TRUMP!
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

These are going to be some fun debates either way.

Massachusetts and Minnesota (and maybe Maine) were definite surprises, as were some of the margins in a few other states (e.g. Virginia). Biden is definitely doing better than expected. However, the big delegate prizes appear to be more or less following expectations; Texas is roughly split and California is leaning Bernie. It looks like this is a very good night for Biden, but hardly a knockout blow to Sanders.

I assume Bloomberg will exit and endorse Biden; that certainly seems to be what his campaign was suggesting tonight. Warren is trickier - her delegate haul isn't going to be all that great, and she clearly has no path to a nomination. But might she try to hang on and eke out a role in a contested convention? Frankly I don't really see how that will work for her, but her campaign is making noises that they're sticking around until at least March 10. This is likely to help Biden a lot as she might fall below the 15% threshold in a number of places, and more of her voters are likely to defect to Sanders than Biden if she ceases campaigning.

If I had to make a prediction today, I'd say Biden will eke out a bare majority of delegates but Sanders will fight to the bitter end. I also think Biden will lose to Trump in the general (though, admittedly, by a smaller margin than Sanders would).
"When I meet God, I am going to ask him two questions: Why relativity? And why turbulence? I really believe he will have an answer for the first." - Werner Heisenberg (maybe)

My understanding is that if no candidate gets 50.1% of the delegates it goes to a contested convention regardless if its a two person race or not at that point, where the delegates become free to vote for whoever.

  8. #458
People talk up a contested convention every year but it never happens because losers drop out and endorse each other through the process until someone ends up with a majority.

As it stands Biden+Buttigieg+Klobuchar is a majority of elected delegates. I think Biden has this after tonight, he's done much better than expected and if Bloomberg drops out and endorses Biden its surely over even if Warren drops out and endorses Sanders.

Plus it seems like the Democrats have a clear choice after tonight. They can go with the winner of the states they need to be targetting to get the Electoral College, or they can go with the winner of California. If they do the latter they've learnt nothing since 4 years ago and deserve to lose the Electoral College again in November.

So Biden apparently mixed up his wife and sister last night. Is that why he's so popular in the American South?

Seriously though, he's got dementia and this is the best the Democrats can do?

Well, Trump is pretty demented as well, so...

Indeed and I despise him and want him to lose, that's not a ringing endorsement. He's also ruthless as hell too. Expect video compilations before long of Biden's "senior moments". In the last few days he's announced he's running for the US Senate and mixed up his wife and sister and who knows how many other mistakes?

He's quite literally not fit to be President. He's also the best on offer by a long margin. What a mess. My only hope is he can choose a good running mate and knows when to retire if his dementia gets worse/25th Amendment gets invoked.

Why? Certainly he's no Nixon but we can't hope to get that lucky in our lifetime.

What makes you think voters are going to look at any of these guys and decide they want them over Sanders?
Well looking back it looks like its happened. Pete's endorsement was key I think, Amy followed and that sent the message to the voters who have coalesced around one versus Sanders; despite the polls saying that people would go to Sanders they didn't. Polls aren't oracles.

Thankfully. Because poor choice suffering dementia is still better than either Sanders or Trump. Lets hope the dithering old fart doesn't screw this up - he may be our best hope now, but I'm not changing my opinion on him.

The only hope Dems have is voter turnout, and this is the argument you're going with? Trump2024!

You guys are discounting the role of the economy, which is rapidly deteriorating. That's the single best indicator whether an incumbent president wins.
Hope is the denial of reality

I'll be happy to be wrong about this, but: you can't necessarily apply pre-Trump electoral logic to 2020.

There are a lot of people who openly admit to supporting Trump only because the economy is doing well.

I'm honestly not sure what the economy is going to look like in November. The current equity market issues might not translate into broader economic malaise depending on the severity of the covid-19 problem. Even if it does, there might not be enough time to really see the effects until next year. I wouldn't bet that the economy is going to prevent a Trump reelection.

Looks like Biden's going to be the nominee. Sanders has fewer delegates than he did at this point in 2016, and there aren't a lot of pro-Sanders states left to go. All because Biden took the state that everyone knew he was always going to take, but it just happened to be right before Super Tuesday and voters can never seem to remember anything that happened more than a week ago. Not to gripe too much since a Biden presidency will probably be too focused on the problem of presidential adult diaper selection to fuck up anything too badly, while Sanders would have fucked up the last remaining things that Trump didn't. On the other hand, I'm not sure Biden is going to be able to keep it together long enough to beat Trump, so this better not be leading us to the worst possible outcome of 4 more years.

Sanders also got hammered in the debates when he became the front runner. He refused to disavow the pro-gulag folks in his campaign and he didn't walk back his pro Castro comments. How much each individual thing matters is anyone's guess but he doesn't function that well under scrutiny.

  30. #480
He also burnt his bridges, he is an ideologue very like Jeremy Corbyn and like Corbyn he has gone backwards the more voters have seen of him.

Sanders isn't as bad as Corbyn but he's about as close as America would ever get.
