Do scouts have to swear allegiance to anything in your country? When I were a lad cubs (scouts for younger kids) had to swear allegiance to God and the Queen to join. That was enough to put me off.

My objection to the boy scouts is

a. their position on homosexuality

b. I had a friend, a very good friend, who worked for them for many years. They found out she was HIV-positive. She was fired.

After that, anything else is just gravy for my dislike.

Well, both of those positions are a result of the Mormon church having control over the Boy Scouts, and imposing their doctrine. The Girl Scouts aren't controlled by the Mormons, and do accept gays. Go figure... a bunch of folks who believe in magic underwear might just fuck up any organization they get their slimy tentacles on.

I was ready to jump ship when I was a Life Scout, 16ish I think. About the time the Boy Scouts made national headlines for stripping the eagle status from two scouts for admitting on TV they were atheist. The homosexual thing didn't pick up steam in the news (recently) until I was already on my way out, just shy of 18.

A three-alarm fire that caused $200,000 in damage to the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta and forced officials to evacuate the prison's housing unit was likely caused by prisoners secretly making illegal booze, according to an investigation obtained by The Associated Press.

The blaze was likely ignited when prisoners hiding containers filled with distilled fruit juice in a shower stall reacted with electrical wire that prisoners often used to heat the mixture, according to the report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

No one was injured in the December blaze at the prison, which houses medium security male inmates. About 65 firefighters responded to the fire, which spread in a pipe chase near the shower stall and took several hours to put out.

The report said the inmates housed in the cell block were known to make spirits from distilled fruit, often stored in plastic-lined cloth containers made at the prison's tailor shop. The inmates would usually hang these handmade concoctions in a pipe chase behind the showers that was covered by a steel plate.

To try to speed up the fermentation process, they would often heat the "hooch" by using electrical wires that they tied into whatever circuits they could find, the report said.

Investigators found two of these burned hooch containers in the pipe chase near the shower. And they found evidence that someone had tampered with the light fixture in the shower, leading them to conclude the blaze was caused by "human intervention."

A) Prison hooch helps keep inmates happy and under control (less likely to get into fights, fuck with the guards, etc. when you've got a buzz on).
B) "Likely spots" are anywhere you can hide one of those small fruit-salad cups (or according to the article, even anywhere you can hide a ziplock bag with a cloth liner). Way to expensive to search all the "likely spots" at any kind of regular interval. Folks already complain about how much it costs to house an inmate per year... imagine doubling that cost just so prisons can afford to do regular contraband checks.
