Thread: What is making you happy right now

I don't see how it's twisting facts to say that Obama increased spending. Once again, the spending increases in the last Bush budget were temporary. They expired. They were replaced by new Obama spending.

My point was more general about politicians, you seem to complain only about Obama

Anyway, his statement was incorrect, federal spending has not 'accelerated at a pace without precedent in history'. It's simply false, it was in fact the second lowest (if adjusted for inflation, and looking back to Reagan). And then they assigned the 2009 stimulus to Obama.

Should he have reversed the spending, or at least not make it permanent? Decent point, so that is the point he should have made. Is spending highest in recent history? Without it looking to go down significantly any time soon? Sure, so say that. But this sounds better, even if it's not exactly honest.

For the record, Romney doesalso twist facts. As does Obama.

I'm quite willing to acknowledge when Romney makes statements that twist the truth. This is not one of them.

..except under Obama federal spending has not 'accelerated at a pace without precedent in history'. Considering that's not true, how is it not a twist? If his point was any of the things you said, why didn't he say that? This is factually untrue.

Because the bailout wasn't a permanent part of spending.

I'm going to use that the next time we go grocery shopping. This candy isn't a permanent part of our spending...so it doesn't really count.

Doesn't make his claim any more right - he didn't increase at an unprecedented level in recent history. Spending hardly increased at all in his years (even if that is also due to the Republicans in Congress). Just say it's the highest spending level in recent history..

Don't see any significantly higher 'acceleration' except in 2008-2009. If you continue the growth from the earlier years, it looks like you still end up roughly at the same spending in 2011 - so it's growth isn't accelerating at unprecedented levels. I'm assuming Romney's, and your, point is that it should be decreasing if anything, but at best it was accelerating at roughly the same rate or less - not accelerating. Which was his claimed 'fact'.

Again, the bailout in 2009 expired in 2010. If Obama did absolutely nothing, spending would have gone down by over half a trillion in 2010. It obviously didn't.

    ICE-CREAM MACHINE!!

AT LAST the dream has come true i have the best fiancee in the world. Normally she's extremely good at being sneaky but today she was tired.and overwhelmed by surprise sushi (a trick I shall be sure to employ many more times in the years to come) and slipped up... so out came the box and inside lay that which I had fearfully coveted for so long! I got another present too but the ice-cream.machine made me bounce most so many delicious ideas...

Also, splashtop is the single best product of its kind. Its not perfect--eg. keyboard issues with android that make apostrophes impossible--but its definitely the best. I feel like Im using my desktop on my tablet.

Isn't this common knowledge to anyone who has a budget? Haven't you ever had an unexpected car repair, medical expense, etc...? Do you factor that unexpected expense into your budget in perpetuity?

um, yeah. its called savings. It averages out to what.... 9 grand a year to own a car? I also have a HSA.

because I'm prepared doesn't mean that the expenses don't exist

I think you are purposefully being obtuse. The US Government doesn't have a savings account. It has a budget, a budget for which it has constantly had to borrow money to finance. When there is a one time expense, (hey, like bailout funds!) there is no question that you have to factor it into your budget, but that in no way means your next years budget should stay in its currently inflated state.

If you had to put ten thousand dollars of an unexpected medical bill on your credit card, that doesn't mean you should put ten thousand dollars worth of debt on that credit card the next year, right? This is not rocket science, this is basic fiscal sanity.

So if you had to pay $5k to fix your car last year because it unexpectedly broke down, but didn't spend the $5k this year because it didn't break down, you'd pat yourself on the back for being a skilled saver?

I realize you're the biggest Obama fanboy here, but must you continue to discredit all Obama supporters out there by being as unwilling to use your brain whenever Obama's name is mentioned?

no, i'd continue to plan for more than 5 grand in expenses, since its seems i'm overdue.

Sign of the good weather: the supermarket sold out the two most popular beers (and they have a good supply)

Heh. In the UK it's the supply of Pimms that is strained during the good weather. I've bought two large bottles for today's beebeekyoo.

And I've got the oranges, cucumber, mint, and Royal Gala apples to add to it.

    1. Strain vanilla-flavored lactose-free yogurt

    2. Chuck into an ice-cream maker with a couple of tablespoons of honey and maybe some extra vanilla

    3. enjoy!

I may never buy ice-cream again. Add a splash of heavy cream for a more ice-creamy mouthfeel.

Last year I did production management/line producer on a film set for a short film (which was screened at a few film festivals ). I liked it, and it was also very good for me. Not only does it look good on a CV, but working a week under a lot of stress with (on average) 16 hour work days in a coordinating role really does teach you your strengths and weaknesses. I thought I did well even though I had no experience in film (but I did have experience organizing events), the director was very pleased too, and the DOP who had quite a bit of experience was also pleased. It also made me realize that this kind of job might be something for me. I've been doubting if my future will be in research for quite some time (and let's face it, if you doubt it.. you lack the passion you need for it that I do see in others). Not necessarily a job in film, but project management and things like that does seem to suit me. And film is of course extra fun - creativity in the artistic sense is not my strong side but I do love film, music, art, so working with that is very nice.

So last week I told the director friend of mine (who doesn't have a project at the moment) that I miss it. Yesterday he and I sat down with a director who's filming in July, and I'm in Mix of 2nd assistent director, line producer, and set leader, together with one other person. Generally I will be on set while she's at the next location coordinating there. Yay! Unpaid of course, though The director is just back from Cannes where her last short film was selected, so that's awesome too.

They took their sweet time getting here but bouncebounce Pacta Sunt Servanda and Chirodin Tomar. Fortunately not too blingy despite the rhodium thanks to the matte finish. As I expected, based on info gleaned from one Thomas Covenant, white gold does not seem to have any magic powers in this world.

Picked up a new entertainment center at Ikea this last Monday for ~$100.

Finally got it put together, learned way to much about drywall, studs, anchors, drills and drill bits. But damn if this thing isn't impressive as fuck. Need a bigger TV now, the 46" looks a tad small.

    Congrats to the Minxes!

OG---seriously, you're doing it backward. A $100 wall system isn't supposed to make you think about buying a bigger TV. Especially not as the father of a young and growing family. Dang, stop making "happy" posts like this....that are really WTF posts.

    Dull and Boring.

Vote due on link between village of Dull and US town of Boring

Residents of the Perthshire village of Dull are due to hear this week whether efforts to forge ties with the US town of Boring have been successful.

Officials in Oregon are set to vote on whether the two places should become "sister communities".

If the vote is passed, the community council in Dull insists it could have real benefits for the Scottish village.

They intend to mark the "exciting" new partnership with a road sign and a street party.
