Thread: Iowa Presidential Caucus

If the GOP is highly likely to win the district, what's to stop a primary challenge against Bachmann, especially when the challenger can paint Bachmann as an outsider? Then again, she does seem to be the same brand of crazy as the district in question.

Nevermind the power of incumbency: A bit of a stretch to portray someone who has represented the district for five years, she's lived in that district that whole time ... But has just had the district changed by judges ... As an outsider.

You reckon GOPers are going to start loving each and every of the judiciaries decisions.

The point is that part of the old district (including the part where she lives) is not a part of the new district. But you're probably right that she's not going to have much difficulty getting reelected.

Thank you for the right, though let's drop the probably.

And so what if the district no longer, like it did, covers her house?

If she gets challenged this year then the challenger has just a few months (if that) to get everything together and launch a challenge based entirely on a quirk by the judiciary.

If she gets challenged in 2 or more years she remains the incumbent who's served the district for nearly a decade already, and the flimsy grounds for a challenge is a pedants case from before the last election.

What'd be awkward would be the opposite, when her seat converted to a Dem majority and she started fishing for a new one.

If I may be juvenile for a moment... well, more juvenile, given the topic of the thread... I just gotta love any institution pronounced "presidential cock-ass."

Regarding Santorum from Loki's link: He said he was talking about "radical environmentalists" who share Obama's "worldview that elevates the Earth above man and says that we can't take those resources, because we're going to harm the Earth by things that frankly are just not scientifically proven." He pointed to the debate over global climate change as an example.

There's common room between dominion and stewardship, in religions and politics. Sounds like he's stoking up fundamentalists to make anyone else "other", to get votes.

Santorum seems to belong to the drill-baby-drill rape-'n-plunder side, the anti-science and anti-intellectual side (that doesn't agree with carbon dating, etc.) He recently spoke to a group of Republican voters and told them [Don't you see how those elites like Obama see you? How they look down on you and think they know better than you?...] Well, yeah, I'd say those who've studied natural gas frakking, and have concerns about polluting entire aquifers, should have a seat at the table. And I wouldn't call them "radical environmentalists".

So this Santorum fellow is kinda like separation of church and state: makes me wanna throw up

Apparently, the first amendment is just a recommendation...or something. He's also against people going to college, and yet he has three college degrees and his oldest daughter is in college now...

Well I have a college degree and I support people getting a college degree. However on a macro scale I think less college would be better. College isn't really a place for real learning (at least at the undergraduate level). However the goal of the degree for myself and others I recommend it for is to open doors and command a higher salary.

It would have been nearly impossible to get the job I have now without a degree. Did getting a degree teach me anything about my job functions? Not really (and not 4 years worth). So I don't see the hypocrisy in what he is saying about college.

Though yeah his anti-freedom stances are annoying =/. But even he would be better than Obama.

The difference is that Santorum benefited from his degrees, is telling his daughters to get the degrees, but is telling the rest of the country that they don't need them. Hypocrisy is the least of his problems.

How about his blatant disregard for the Constitution?

Not my preferred choice but like I said... better than Obama.

Too many people do go to university nowadays but it's like Game Theory. It may be optimal overall if less went, but in the current situation you as an individual should go.

Isn't that just sound investment strategy on behalf of his daughters?

Santorum is the severely extreme side of the GOP. He's a theocrat that doesn't believe in the separation of church and state (he pukes). In interviews he (and his wife) say God has called him to run for office, and if he loses <ie, if Obama wins re-election>....it's the end of our nation! If we don't elect St. Santorum, Satan will take over, since The Prince of Lies is out to destroy the US!!!

Besides, President Obama is a "snob" who wants to indoctrinate our children using those elite lib'rul college professors, take away their faith, and create them in his image! It's a vast left wing conspiracy to kill faith, family, and country! OMG!

Hey Lewk, you've claimed before that theocrats would be bad for our democracy. So why would you prefer Santorum over Obama?

You know, I bet you'd make a really good "this is your brain on drugs" PSA.

That duality shouldn't be a problem for a proper Catholic, right? When you can be the son of yourself, you can also be in the clutches of yourself.

Subtle differences in focus gave them away. The content is indeed pretty similar.

    Yes, yes

    This is what I want
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
